Bulletproof Coffee WITH or INSTEAD of Breakfast?

Commented on January 06, 2015

I have never tried Bulletproof coffee but it sure does sound amazing. I am wondering do people drink this with their breakfast or is the coffee their breakfast? I love my bacon and eggs, so is drinking Bulletproof coffee along with them pointless? Seems like just a ton of extra calories.

Dude, the point of the BPC is so you have something to kickstart a non-protein/non-carb fast. It helps you get fat adapted. And I keep telling you all over paleohacks, you can make it with MCT oil off amazon, whatever coffee bean you like, and whatever grassfed butter you can get your hands on. Mr. Asprey doesn't make a dime if you don't buy it from him - you can, but you don't have to. The mental effects are there, the energy boost is there, the stuff works for this n=1. I work out after having a BPC, and then go and do a carb backload the rest of the day. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Yes you do. Writing this response is more time than you deserve. Otherwise I'd point out the dozens of times you've made some snarky comment about Asprey or his products. I listen to what he has to say because he (unlike you) gives good advice.

I don't comment on everything that mentions bulletproof coffee, but I do find it funny the zombies (like yourself) on here that he has created.

I think you're overestimating how substantial that income is. Also, why do you feel the need to comment on every single question on this site that mentions his products or his protocols? You're constantly bashing the guy. I don't use his products but I can say with absolute certainty that the information he has put out on his website and his podcast have helped more people than you will in a lifetime.

Nearly flavorless....not flavorless. Also, yes he recommends his special MCT oil, and of course Asprey wants you to think he is doing it for the good of the world, not as a substantial second income.

You obviously know nothing about bulletproof coffee. The recipe doesn't call for adding coconut oil, it calls for adding MCT oil, which is nearly flavorless. Also, the "fanatics" mainly suggest drinking it in lieu of breakfast for the purpose of intermittent fasting. Second, Asprey has said time and time again that he barely makes a profit from his products and that most of the money goes back into his site and staff. Do you honestly think he would keep his job at Trend Micro if he was rolling in the dough?

Stick with your regular breakfast. No worries, I won't be offended by the downvoters. The bulletproof coffee fanatics will tell you to do that instead of breakfast. If you like breakfast and it works for you, don't change just to make some internet salesman rich. If you like the taste of coconut oil in coffee, do it, if not don't. Coconut cream tastes better in coffee to me, but I also prefer dairy cream to coconut cream most of the time.

I drink Bulletproof coffee with my breakfast. I use kerrygold butter and either mct oil or coconut oil plus 6 grams of 85% dark chocolate. I like having a calorie dense breakfast 900 to 1000 calories. With my other 2 meals consisting of 450 to 500 calories each.

Having BP coffee with breakfast is very nourishing and sets me up for eating right and staying satiated for the rest of the day.

On days that I have Bulletproof coffee it replaces breakfast and lunch. If you find yourself getting hungry too early then use more butter. Read the articles about it on the bulletproof executive site for more information, but the purpose of it is to kickstart ketosis for mental clarity and performance. It can also be used as part of an intermittant fasting program for fat loss and autophagy, which is not stopped when you only consume fat. If you had the coffee along with a usual breakfast containing protein and carbohydrates you would negate many of the benefits of consuming Bulletproof coffee.

How much butter are you using?

I take bulletproof coffee AS breakfast. Keeps me going for a couple of hours.

I use butter + cocoa + cream, but recently reduced the fat percentage as it was too high for my level of exercise.

I have bp coffee with Kerrygold and mct every morning around 8am and then eat my first meal between 1pm-4pm depending on the day. And I'm usually not even starving at that point. After six weeks I've dropped from 190 lb to 175 with only that one have to my diet/lifestyle. Works for me

A follow up question is if I could have BPC as a pre wod (around 6am) and then have a mini meal with only protein and carbs for post wod (around 8am)?

I am not hungry after the BPC but I eat a sweet potato and eggs muffin because you should replenish your muscles right? or should I just have BPC and wait until lunch?

Thanks!

I would go either/or. The thing with BPC is that it's all good fats, and no protein/carbs, so no insulin spikes, so you can kick start your system in fat burning mode. Sure, the more butter you add, the less of your own fat stores you will burn.

Personally, I didn't notice much of a mental acuity increase from the extra butter, but did from either coconut oil, or MCT oil. So, for me, the butter is there to froth up nicely, the same way as you'd add heavy cream - because that's what butter is, churned up heavy cream.

Yeah, you could add gelatin or eggs, but I don't normally do that as I want no insulin spike whatsoever when doing IFs. The point for me is to provide a very low insulin period and to kick start my day with a ton of ketones and some caffeine. This stuff cuts my appetite off until way late in the afternoon. Sure, i could fast without it too, but it's a bit harder. Not much, but it also has very little downside.

Now after I work fasted, I wait a few hours (minimum of 30m max 3h) and then I do a carb load (usually baked sweet potatoes) with plenty of protein (usually steak). This provides a short spike of high insulin to provide the high end of the curve. So between the low and the high levels, I get a nice insulin reset. The next day, I do have a high protein breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and don't do an IF and don't do a BPC.

How other people use it, I don't know, but I suspect it would be for similar purposes, or just because they like it.

There's nothing wrong with having a breakfast, but personally, I wouldn't do both a BPC and a breakfast as they have different goals.

I have BP Coffee with cocooil before a work out around 6am then breakfast around 10am. tried marks daily apple version with two egg yolks today. Sooooo foamy, not bad though. probably the best option if you are really looking to replace bfast. Still not as good as two hard boiled eggs and a cup o cocooil BP, thats my jam!
