Why do you think so many people out of the paleo circle think skipping breakfast is a terrible thing to do?

For a long time I believed them, but since reading up about paleo, a few people suggest skipping breakfast/IF and I'm not so sure of what's what any more.

@Dave S., not eating really helps with weight loss every anorexic teenager knows this. But I don't need to loose weight and I'm not interested in a 0% fat percentage. I don't get this bragging about how long people can cope without food. It seems a contest for some

@Wendy - Haha, good question! There may be some health benefit to extending the overnight fast. Increased autophagy and all that rot. Some people find that it really helps with fat loss. Probably appetite/hunger control as well. But, as always, YMMV. A good amount of protein at breakfast also helps with appetite/hunger control. So there you have it.

The first rule of paleo is ..., okay it's not the first rule. The second rule of paleo is eat when hungry, don't eat when your not. If that means eating later, fine. If you are hungry when you get up, then eat. At first, it makes sense to keep your normal meal schedule while you get the hang of paleo (or primal or whatever). Then, if you wnat to try IF (or skipping a meal from time to time), go for it. Some coffee with cream is all I really need in the morning - but I still eat breakfast when I want to (usually on the weekends).

Yes, type 2 diabetics should eat more oatmeal. I wouldn't want my blood sugar to be normal. Oatmeal is probably fine for lean, active types that don't have digestive issues with it. But Martin Berkham would probably only eat it on a workout day and not first thing in the morning.

This describes me completely. I can go until 4 or 5 in the evening without eating if I am at home, working around the house. However, if I go to work without eating, I can hear the vending machines calling my name by 9AM. The problem is I am not usually hungry before I leave for work, so eating is out of the question. Luckily, I discovered bulletproof coffee!

Some people find that if they don't eat breakfast they're starving by lunchtime and make very bad food decisions because they're hungry/their willpower is low. Some people just can't function in the morning without breakfast for whatever reason (less common on Paleo but I'm sure it happens).

I'd advise you to get set with Paleo for a few months and then start thinking about it. One thing at a time.

Because they can't imagine life off the insulin rollercoaster.

Edit: I wouldn't worry about IF for now. Just focus on eating high quality whole foods, learning out how to cook/shop and moving your body. If you're out and there are no healthy options, then go for the IF.

There were some studies showing an association between eating breakfast and lower BMI that got a lot of press. As usual, press coverage gave the impression that association is the same as causation, resulting in a lot of people believing that eating breakfast will cause them to lose weight or help maintain their current weights.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast.Is.The.Most.Important.Meal.Of.The.Day. BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY!!

If it's said often enough, it becomes true.

"You've been fasting all night silly, that's why it's called break fast."

Same people that have oatmeal for first thing in the am.

Every body is different, that whole not one sock fits all deal, so you need to do what works for you. N=1 is your friend, play with different scenarios and you will figure out exactly what you need. It's also fun to tinker but I'm also a big nerd :)

Note: Me, I was definitely in the breakfast camp, always had something to eat before working out, and after several months of tinkering found a daily meal ratio that allowed me to work out in a fasted state and still keep to being explosive and strong. It had nothing to do with Paleo but just was how I was raised and what I did when I was racing. I do utilize sweet potatoes and tubers, berries and other starchy veg in addition to proteins and such.

If your just staring paleo, I wouldn't worry about intermittent fasting for some time. I would get a hang of cooking the food, walking, and maybe learning more about barbell weight lifting. I think IF helps more when your trying to get super visible abs without giving up your personal life. I tried it, but it made it difficult for me to eat enough for the day. This might be useful for you, but I wouldn't go crazy over it yet. Also it prevent information over load from trying too many things at once, before having the fundamentals down.
