Don't try and replace bread with non-bread either. Eat real food. I find that there's so much real food out there, despite not being strict paleo anymore, bread is one thing that I've yet to add back to my diet and don't foresee doing so either. Want a burger? You need just two things: fork and knife.

It is not allowed. The rulers of the Paleo Diet have made it illegal, and if you eat some there could be a fine involved, maybe jail time. Be very careful to follow every rule you read this diet exactly, even if they contradict each other, or even if it makes you feel bad. You have to follow the rules.

Yes I'm aware of this as I have tried lettuce and mushrooms as substitutes but I saw gluten and wheat free bread in the supermarket and my question was is it allowed as a substitute on paleo or not!

I eat bread because it's a convenient way to put other foods together, and because I personally do better on a higher carb, lower meat type of diet.  However since I react rather badly to gluten I avoid it strictly.  Ever since starting gluten-free, I felt great, but I really missed sandwiches as a quick meal until I started buying traditional Mexican corn tortillas.  The nixtamalization process of soaking the corn with lime not only reduces antinutrients in the corn, but also makes the niacin more bioavailable and adds calcium.  I concede that many people should still not eat corn for certain serious health reasons, but since I don't have a problem with it, I buy the tortillas and use them.  You still need to watch out for additives and GMO corn when buying tortillas though.  If you can get the colored, heirloom corn varieties, they may be more nutritious.  I think corn tortillas or other types of flatbread are a much better 'bread' option than many of the this-and-that-free 'frankenbreads' out there using all kinds of crazy ingredients and gums to try to imitate yeast-risen wheat bread.  They are also much cheaper than frankenbread, sometimes even cheaper per slice than wheat bread loaves.  The only thing about cooking with corn tortillas is that they taste nasty when cold, so you have to heat them up, preferably with dry heat.  I have a griddle I use to toast them lightly and build a 'taco' or 'quesadilla' on top of the bread.  I still use them mostly as a platform for more nutiritous types of food, though, and wouldn't advise just eating lots of corn tortillas straight as a major source of fuel.  :)

Can you? I guess, but generally it's not worth doing. For one, they are still higher in carbohydrates than most paleo eaters want, for two, they don't scratch a bread itch. It feels like you're eating a flavorless corn muffin. Finally, there's nothing preventing there from being plenty of additives and non-natural foods.

I would not sweat it once in a while, since it's probably not too harmful. They are still much better than gluten containing bread which really shouldn't even be consumed once in a while.

Most - if not all - gluten-free bread still has a ton of additives and vegetable oils in them. Not only is gluten-free bread still devoid of any decent nutrition, it has ingredients that may trigger specific reactions: brown rice, eggs, yeast, etc.

Whether you can substitute it or not is up to you, your tolerances and your ideals. Given that paleo dogma forbids vegetable oils, I???d say no.

You know, there's a lot more types of food out there other than bread and bread-like products.
