it seems like it'd help you engage your core and make it less likely to cheat during exercise. however i read this

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19417231

EDIT - "i have a connective tissue disorder and gross hypermobility in my spine and neck." and would like to know if this is appropriate training to work on spinal stability and core activation given my unique health problems.

ok. holly, after reading your interaction with LikesLardinMayo and Luckie below, it is obvious that I have given you poor advice. You need to talk to a professional and get a professional decision. What some random strangers on a blog feel is not appropriate given your condition. I would suggest finding a good Physical Therapist to walk through movements with you. You may also want to do a therapeutic yoga course. You should not be worried about bosu or weights, you should be focused on defined consistent movements under proper guidance.

The fact that I, mistakenly, tried to give you additional useful information...well...I'm sorry it wasn't what you wanted, my mind reading isn't what it used to be. Now if you'll excuse me I need to head to my Rape Culture Meeting and after that I need to come up with some new and interesting ways to subjugate women. I will amend what I said... I think you are seeing sexism where you want to see it, because it is easier to call someone a sexist and say that is why you are not listening to them than to come up with some real reasons for your hostility. (Also, I am not a guy, so I can't jerk off, mirror or not. Unless jerk off is not gender specific, in which case, pls excuse me for a moment, my boobs distracted me.)

Your question was incredibly vague and so I thought a single click to see who you were might help me answer your question better. Also, when asking for help regarding ab work you might tell us WHY you want to do it. Ab work for lookin hot isn't the same as ab work for a someone with serious health issues. Which, btw, make the Bosu ball a monumentally bad idea. It would be like wearing those rocking shoes when you have weak ankles.

LLiM even pointed out when they (sorry, don't know LLiM's gender and also do not find it relevant to their comments) posted the link that it is kinda "meathead" but also has good info if you can look past it. I think it would be MORE sexist to only post pristine-feminism-approved fitness sites because poor sad easily offended little girls wouldn't be able to get past the bikinis to find anything helpful.

Also, you might want to change your password, since you may have been hacked. Looking at your history it looks like your questions are about burned food, chocolate, DiY beauty tips and tricks etc... Your posts don't scream "elite performance" so why would anyone, male or not, suppose you wanted to work on something as esoteric as evening out your ab activation beyond what simple weight lifting will naturally do? No good deed goes unpunished I guess.

Holly - What does your gender have to do with anything? If you had been male and asked about silly things like wobble boards and Bosu balls I'd have assumed you wanted a six-pack and...guess what...I'd have said the same thing. Core training is ridiculous for most people in most situations and though I tailored my answer to your gender I didn't assume vanity because of your gender, I assumed it because you are human. I also didn't see you chasing performance or elite skills in your posts. Really you aren't helping feminism by accusing everyone you think is male of hating women...

No. Get a book called "Starting Strength". Deadlifts and squats are pretty much all the core training a beginner needs. Bosu balls are inherently very instable (duh), a situation you rarely, if ever meet irl, even in nature, especially with a load on your back. And you're much more prone to injury than doing deads or squatting.

Considering the conversations you've taken part in are related to Chocolate cravings, DIY beauty and constipation I'm not sure you have any place to start other than clarifying without a chip on your shoulder. The fact is that you chose to ignore the rest of the advice even though it applies. Forget the gimmicky, infomercial equipment and stick to tried and true things like hiking, lifting weights and sprints.

to address the question about BOSU not being functional training, I would beg to differ. In modern times we quite often walk/lift/exercise on stable, level "ground" such as pavement or flooring, but our paleo ancestors had to do physical work on ground of different grades, where there were stones, rocks, tree limbs, etc. So yes, BOSU is certainly an artificial representation of that notion...it would be optimal to actually go outdoors and lift things on natural unstable ground like they did, but as far as things you can do inside a gym, I believe it can help.

I think bosu balls are the opposite of functional training. I put them on par with those sneakers that force you to be unbalanced..... You are training muscle groups to act in a way that is contrary to your goals.

How often are you trying to lift a heavy rock while standing on a jellyfish? So why would you train that way?

Your core is not designed to keep you balanced while standing on unstable ground. If you want to focus on your core, lift heavy weight. Your core will need to stabilize your body throughout the lift.

Hard to tell from the abstract, but my educated guess is that this sample of "twelve trained men" are likely to be functionally fit, and naturally engage their cores in any physical activity. So there's not going to be a difference with the BOSU. For those of us who may not be in optimal shape, and who do not necessarily automatically "engage our cores" while exercising, I've personally found that working with balance challenges (such as BOSU, swiss ball, balance disks, or even just doing exercises standing on one leg) will sort of force me to engage my core.

T-Nation (as dumb as that site can be) had a good article with photos which talks about Ab work and women. It makes a good case that for health and looking good naked concentrated Ab work is not a smart plan.

Really if you do some heavy lifting ala Squats and Deadlift you shouldn't need any other Ab work at all. NEED. If you want to do it great but I don't think the gadgets and stuff really are helpful.

If you are starting out just walk and lift heavy ala 5-3-1 or Start Strength and 6-8 weeks in maybe add a day of sprints. Other than that I don't see much that the average Paleo'er needs to do.

Which, btw, make the Bosu ball a monumentally bad idea. It would be like wearing those rocking shoes when you have weak ankles.

Am I a boy? I don't see how you can possibly know that based on anything I said. Holly, really, if you are going to ask vague questions you can't expect people to guess at your intentions. Or if you do you can't get so bent out of shape because they guessed wrong. This idea that wanting to look good naked is some how sexist is...well...silly. Now if you are done with the libel...

well we'll just agree to disagree, i think core strength is extremely important. i have a connective tissue disorder and gross hypermobility in my spine and neck. gaining a six pack for shits 'n giggles was never my intention.

I care about how I look naked. (Totally hot is the answer, BTW). Why is that a negative thing? And...

I did. I suggested 5-3-1 and starting strength. You'll notice that others gave that same answer. You'll also notice that several people have said BOSU are pretty goofy. YOU should use the bosu ball, preferably on a slippery floor.

No, you said "engage your core." You didn't say why you wanted to do that.
