Body-Fat Testing: Bod Pod or Hydrostatic?

Answered on November 11, 2013

About a year ago I used a hand held device that measures body-fat and got a reading of 10%.

Since then I have lost even more weight and look even leaner. I had a fat caliper test done that measured 7% a few months ago but I am interested in more accurate methods.

Can you recommend a test?

I live in California now, in Palo Alto, near San Francisco. I graduated a long time ago, in the early 80s. Did you move back to Morgantown or somewhere else?

Agree with @The Quilt on dexa being the best. I'm from CA and found this new company that is doing dexa in a mobile unit and they go to gyms. Check out dexa on wikipedia and on all the science research institute pages...all doctors use dexa as the tool for body composition testing. When I had my test done with the company in CA I not only found out my body fat, but my muscle mass and bone density as well. I'm now able to track my muscle mass gains/losses along with body fat by individual regions of my body. It will be interesting to see how my body reacts to various training programs and nutrition over time as I try to lose some body fat but keep my calorie burning muscle mass. Good goal right?? Anyways, if you're in Los Angeles the company is BodySpec (www.body-spec.com). They are cheaper than hospitals and it's nice when they just show up to your local crossfit or boutique gym. And FYI @dzone, you will be higher on dexa in term of body fat...nothing hides. I'm really good at letting out all my air in water and tested at 9% in hydrostatic -- came in at 13.9% on dexa...much more accurate. You are almost down to essential fats in the single digits (http://www.acefitness.org/acefit/healthy-living-article/60/112/what-are-the-guidelines-for-percentage-of/). You should virtually have no fat under your skin at that point. Truth is always better.

I use a GE dexa with the body comp module. Most accurate available.

In discussing this question with an exercise physiologist, I was told that the BodPod requires regular calibration and most facilities do not calibrate as often as they should. Hydrostatic is apparently more accurate for this reason.

BodPod is relatively cheap (could cost you anywhere from 25-50 dollars) and is very fast. I had one done a couple of months ago. I would go with that one. I don't know what kind of hand device you used, but I would suspect it was very inaccurate. If a person really knows how to use the calipers, that can be an approximation. Most people don't do a good job though.

On a different note, did you go to WVU? I went to undergrad school there as I grew up in southern W.V.
