tests after stroke

hi there ~ i'm a 49 yr old woman who has been eating paleo for about a year. some fermented dairy still, no sugar, grains/gluten, occasional sweet potatoe. two years ago i had 2 small strokes ~ total surprise of course, no family history, no high blood pressure, etc. after experiencing horrible side effects from the meds they put me on, i took myself off of them (to my doctors horror!) and started researching. that led me to the paleo diet. my question is: what tests should i be getting considering the history of stroke when i go to my doctor? i'm in canada and am looking for tests that i can get through my conventional medicine doctor. i don't have access to any integrative practitioners at this time. i have not had any testing done since starting down the paleo path. i'm thinking cholesterol, c-rective protein, vitamin D. thanks for your thoughts!

thank you! i didn't have much choice though...the meds were worse than the strokes! after 6 weeks i was describing myself as being 'all wobbly inside' and had to talk myself from one room to the next to remember what i was there for ~ when i started researching i knew that i was experiencing all of the worst side-effects described by other folks. i teach yoga and was not big on meds to begin with. however, it can be difficult to go it alone and make that choice when you are feeling vulnerable. best choice i ever made. thanks for your encouragement! i enjoy paleo hacks so much.

Hi Katie, I'm so impressed that you chose changing your diet over taking meds! Can't wait to see your test results. cheers, nancy, 52, in Mississauga

Have you been tested for a clotting disorder?

Unless you have one, or a clear and diagnosed cause for the clots, I don't think there is yearly tests that would be useful. My daughter had an ischemic stroke just a few hours before she was born, from a clot in a vein by her liver that traveled up. We were both tested for a clotting disorder. Other than that, with no other cause apparent, there have been no other tests (except for her other problems, mainly epilepsy).

You may be interested in what this program/site has to offer http://blog.trackyourplaque.com/. Personally I would like to have your base levels of any of my previous tests (pre or post stroke) to assess change. I think your list is actually fine.

Do you know if your stroke was hemorrhagic (bleeding in the brain) vs. infarct (blood clot)? I think that makes a huge difference.

You should get a lipid panel and an LDL-P if you can get that, fasting blood glucose and Hba1c, thyroid panel (ideally with free T3, rT3, and free T4), vitamin D level.

These will help you evaluate the Paleo diet.
