Spin the Blood Panel: What would you choose?

It's pin the tail on JuBa time as I'm getting a CBC run + a blood smear. Instead of arguing with my doc over what to have done, she has a few specific that she is going to do, I want to come with a clean and concise list. There are also about 200 little boxes that could be checked on the sheet, let's bingo them.

As I see the occasional blood work show up on PH I thought it would be interesting to see what others thought. I'm thinking a lipoprotein panel would be good as it shows total cholesterol, LDL/HDL, Triglycerides, etc.

  • If you had carte blanche, what would you ask for? Why?

  • What do you wish you had run or could have run? Why?

  • If you haven't had a panel, and would like one, are there any tests that interest you? Why?

My doc definitely mentioned the cost and I made it clear that it didn't matter - what I want is what I want and imma gonna get it. If they're taking the blood might as well take the above and beyond approach if I'm able to.

I still have to have tests run so thought having an all inclusive panel at the same time would be interesting. Hopefully curiosity doesn't kill the cat.

I wouldn't run any of anything...most the healthy ninetysomethings I know lived that long by NOT going to the MD and relying on good diet, exercise, and holistic care.

@mer - thanks bunches! i will file these away. @sage... i have no idea. i wish it were as easy as saying "i would like this please" and then it's done. i'm paying the doc - not the other way round. @jim i wish i could go that route but unfortunately i have other things happenings so this will need to be all inclusive. thanks for the info tho!

You can always order most labs online via sites like LEF which are usually performed by either LabCorp or Quest (they do the draws too). It's cheaper, easier and cuts out the middle man.

i don't understand why doctors fight about what is necessary if their patients are willing to pay for the test.

I asked for the whole shebang and got shot down by my doc. I got a lipid panel, a vit d, thyroid and prolactin(???). I wanted a C reactive protein and a hemoglobin A1C since I have mad diabeetus in my family tree. I am POed that I didn't get the CrP because my HDL came back mad high - a test for inflammation would have helped me to determine whether the HDL is due to inflammation or because I am a mutant (I think).
