Any problems with blood pressure on Paleo?

I am on day 8 of Paleo and have been losing weight and feeling great. Today, though, I noticed extreme pressure in my head whenever I stood up. This has never happened to me before. I've had the whole stand up too fast and get dizzy thing, yes, but not pressure. I decided to take my blood pressure at the store because I just felt weird and it was high for me (150/90). I have always had normal to low blood pressure, so this concerns me.

I'm just curious if anyone else experienced this. This may have nothing to do with Paleo, but it's the only change I've made, so I have to assume.

I don't eat much salt at all. I'm drinking plenty of fluids.

Nope, no problems with BP for me. My BP was 90/56 after a year on Paleo. I eat a lot of meat, eggs and use an obscene amount of salt on everything. And I do get pretty stressed out a lot. Though I'm not sure what my BP was before Paleo but just keep checking regularly to see if it lowers back down.

Thanks, Michael. I find myself worrying about everything lately and didn't even think about stress, fighting off a cold and just plain life. It's funny, I have had so many vegan and vegetarian friends tell me that this way of eating (Paleo) is so unhealthy that I'm starting to believe it. The thing is, though, I feel better than I have felt in so long, I have no bloating or IBS issues and my energy is higher; I can't help but think this way of eating must be doing something right. :)

I and others have experienced normalized blood pressure on paleo, in my case 10-20 points lower, a big deal. But of course, bp is subject to psychological factors as well -- if you were worried enough to go get it checked, then you quite possibly were stressed during the reading as well. Not to mention that before the strange feelings in your head, you could have been stressed about various things, including, say, the new diet?

It might make sense to get a decent blood pressure monitor for home. That way you can investigate this a bit on your own. If you ended up having to see a doctor, at least you'd have data and a pattern to report. Given the price, hassle and stress of a doctor's visit, and given a doctor can't tell from one reading, good or bad, what's really going on, it's worth the minor investment.

There's probably no diet or exercise that's as healthful as piece of mind.

I wouldn't be terribly concerned at this point. You have only been paleo for 8 days. See how things turn out in a few months. It takes a little while for your body to get used to your new, healthier lifestyle, especially after years of SAD.

My blood pressure rose noticeably on paleo when I first started out. I closely adhered to the version of paleo espoused in Robb Wolf's book. Before starting it, my BP was consistently 115/75 or so but was consistently 130/85 or higher after. I was good condition both before and after starting eating paleo. I stuck faithfully to the version that I believed Robb was touting for nearly two years. Maybe I was reading the book wrong, who knows. I felt great before starting paleo and I continued to feel great afterwards.

Anyway, to shorten this tale, my BP came back down once I added back in a good amount of "safe starches." I was tested yesterday, as a matter of fact, and it was 113/74. Two months ago, it was 109/76.

My layman guess is that being so low carb "stressed" my body in some way and caused my BP to go up. It's not like I got up to an unsafe level, though. I think.
