I plan on running marathons for a few more years, but no more than two a year. I run three days a week, and lift two and am in the best shape I have ever been in.

Wasn't Cordain a runner? I am curious what his thoughts are on the process as he has a book focused on Paleo for Endurance Athletes. Are you sure it's not the high grain, carb, sugar diet causing all the damage on top of the overtraining? Seems like blaming running based upon studying 12 people is kind of, erm NOT scientific. I mean if I talk to 12 fat people in Georgia who eat peaches, may I conclude that all obesity is caused by eating peaches?

I completely agree that long distance running is unhealthy. I walked one half. At 68, I don't think I would ever run a half even if I could. However, the 12 lifelong endurance runners had done at least 100 marathons. That is far beyond what the typical marathoner does.

The article I posted was not opinion. It was based upon 12 lifelong endurance runner who agreed to testing. 100% had cardiac fibrosis that they did not know about. in the control group of HIIT lifers......not one had cardiac fibrosis. That is scientific fact whether you believe it or not.

(right? the opposite of having a reason). Me assuming you would do such a thing might be grounds for you to feel offended. However, just because you have your 'context' doesn't mean I see it that same way.

Jack flack does not deter me. I get a lot more of it from my profession. You should look up Judah Folkes one day. He lost his department chairmanship of surgery at a major academic facility because he discovered that you could cure cancer if you blocked its blood supply. His peers mocked him and ostracized him. Thirty years later he work was recognized and now changed oncology. Avastin came to life because of his perserverance. I can handle all the criticism I get. My profession has passed out much bad info and I have to remedy that. So sometimes what I say will cut across your reality

This is why dietary advice blows....it has no context for the person in question. Robb Wolf and Oprah biochemistry does not work the same. They could if oprah would stop listening to Dr Oz. When we do things that take us off track a mile....we have to walk back two miles just to get back to our beginning. Then we can make real progress toward a goal. My site will teach you how to think about that track your on.....and how to stop re assess and then back track and begin to find your optimal self. All based upon biochemistry and physiology

There will be a written part and eventually a chat room where a certain number of people will be able to ask questions and get answers.......or direct you where you need to be. The blog is but one part of changing how you think about things. Everything I do or say is about making you think one way or another. Once you understand a thing.....greater knowledge comes.

Looking only at biochemical and physiological mechanisms is a decent way to explain known phenomena or to generate hypotheses. It is not, however, a reliable way to predict outcomes. If a randomized, controlled study gives a certain set of results, not even a major paradigm shift in science or any new discovery can change those results, it can only change the interpretation. Interpretations are "cooked", results are results. If you don't buy into evidence based medicine, and rely only on clever story-telling, you are risking your health on shaky ground.

Jack youre going to learn from me when I make an omega three clain or a resveratrol claim.....its based upon the context I put it in then.....if you generalize that concept then you have erred in your thought to intrepret what you thought I said. Omega threes and resveratrol have context too. And I have many patients no longer on either because we fixed their original biochemical problems. When your broken. you may need a new tool to fix it. this is where me and Kurt Harris will differ. Eating clean sometimes wont fix all problems. It will fix many but I want straight A's not a B,C, or D

dr k. you sure have been taking a whole lot of flack lately. it's like these guys think you are grass fed beef or something. trying to eat you alive.

from my observation, dr k has participated on paleohacks in a pretty decent manner. he seems to be very strongly opinionated. i know i certainly don't agree with him all the time, but jiminy christmas folks, ease up.

if you want to pick on someone, pick on personman. (by the way... super odd side note there... i've often wondered if dr k is actually personman. that would throw this into another realm if it were true)

at any rate... yes i see the reasoning for patrik to implement the new rules for titles like "Dr" and professional credentials. it makes sense. if we take doc at his word, and hang on everything he says cause he's a "Doc", then paleohacks could turn into a quack site pretty quickly.

a number of his recommendations might be discomforting to some, but so are mine. i don't agree with taking high quantities of fish oil and resveratrol, but you know what... some people think i'm looney because they found out that i soak oats. so big deal.

fact is.. he contributes. i've seen his comment sparring with chris masterjohn and he seems to have quite an intricate understanding of the human body and nutrition, and he is definitely not a mainstream doc if he really is one.

so for now... "the quilt" it is. or whatever. fine with me.

judging by Dr. K's weight loss, and PersonMan's photo, the chances of them being related are slim

Agreed Jack. I don't quite understand the attacks. Of course if the good doc continues to insist on making his personal political beliefs public he will die by his own hand and will need no help from others.

It never will....,,ambi beliefs lie in RCT. Mine dont. All RCT is are cooked opinions. The Atlantic article pointed out that. The best method is two million years of natural selected biochem and physiology. He is not a buyer so he will not adapt well to my quilt.....,,but I am quite confident like Judah was I am right. Science does not lie like evidence based medicine when it's based upon a false assumption

All I ask is that if a person is going to make recommendations or specific claims that they provide some reference about where they got the idea. I really couldn't care less about whether the person is a doctor or not, because I prefer empirical evidence to authority-based arguments.

Doc - you are funny. I know that you are thinking of things for reason. Otherwise, you would be coming up with your ideas and claims about omega 3 and such for... um... no reason. (right? the opposite of having a reason). Me assuming you would do such a thing might be grounds for you to feel offended. However, just because you have your 'context' doesn't mean I see it that same way.

And another thing. I never said that I felt that 'flack' deters you. I was simply acknowledging that you've been getting a lot of it lately. I was just voicing my perspective for all to see. From my observation, it doesn't seem to discourage you. So great. Well played, sir. Carry on... and I will continue to keep an open mind and a watchful eye on what you bring to the table. Thanks.

100%, surely you are not serious... I'm sure 100% of marathoners have not been examined or tested for any study. I'm interested in science not your dogma.

What % of marathoners actually suffer ill health effects from it? Just out of curiosity at what volume do you think you start to suffer health effects?

The article I posted was not opinion. It was based upon 12 lifelong endurance runner who agreed to testing. 100% had cardiac fibrosis that they did not know about. in the control group of HIIT lifers......not one had cardiac fibrosis. That is scientific fact whether you believe it or not.

I completely agree that long distance running is unhealthy. I walked one half. At 68, I don't think I would ever run a half even if I could. However, the 12 lifelong endurance runners had done at least 100 marathons. That is far beyond what the typical marathoner does.
