Pre-Menstrual Bloat

Hiya, so Ive been paleo for thirty days or so now (a noob, yes!) and am loving it, feeling great etc. Have gained 4kg muscle mass doing very little lifting and lost 3% body fat even having upped my previous cal intake by 1000 (I was underfed for an extended period of time, really). So all good. But Im heading into my first paleo period, and while my other usual symptoms (mostly mood swings) have been present, albeit for much shorter stints, this time round Im feeling SUPER fat and bloated. My body has changed shape a bit with paleo, and while im leaner my pants are tighter because I stopped storing weight around my mid section and am less chicken legged. Anyway, just curious to know if any others out there experienced any serious bloating on paleo? I wasnt under the impression that pms necessarily vanished for everyone, but as I didnt experience this before Im generally curious about why Im having to endure so much now. (Also trying not to freak out and relate it to food consumption, because Ive been eating fine and numbers are dropping). Have been eating more paleo carbs this week and less fats, because thats what ive been hankering for. Also have the flu now for the first time in like two years. Any feedback would be appreciated! Im curious to hear others experiences with this and all things menstrual! (lol)

Cheers, Alice

Good to hear, thanks. I was VERY briefly on the pill (im talking like a month or something pathetic haha) prior to paleo - for the pms mood swings...but was never sure about it and in going paleo decided to ditch it. My hormones have had a bit of a run-around, in that regard. Did you find that you blew up 'like a puffer fish' initially, even in the beginnings of your paleo ventures? As in, am I wrong in expecting radical disappearance after the dietary switch? (guessing yes, sigh) Hmmm...

Hi Alice, It will probably take a few cycles for your hormones to settle in I imagine with such a big change in diet. I stopped contraception around the same time I went paleo, and I noticed that each cycle became better and better to the point now (about 10months along) I don't notice any symptoms at all really. I used to blow up like a puffer fish and be super angry/weepy etc

Upping my Magnesium (from 250 to 400 mg) & going vlc the week before my period reduces my bloating considerably.

Carbs really blow me up--but the extra Magnesium seems to be keeping my carb/chocolate craving at bay.

Here's an interesting link that supports my n=1 around Magnesium: http://www.diabeteslibrary.org/View.aspx?url=Article819

I feel you. I'm on the second day of my period right now.

Paleo helps, and it does take a few cycles (and no hormonal BC) let your hormones "level out"

I always want more carbs right before (and during) my period, on or off paleo. Like right now I'm eating rice pasta. sue me. I'm also not murdering the townsfolk so it evens out. I also CRAVE hard cider (for the bubbles and the just-enough-alcohol-content) when i usually am just fine sans alcohol.

I agree with the fish oil.

the bloat is NO WHERE NEAR AS BAD on paleo vs. SAD. when I eat (GF) SAD diet I can gain/lose TWELVE pounds of water weight over the course of a cycle. Paleo, my weight loss plateaus, rather than having weight gain, and then I lose the water weight (and it's maybe 4 pounds, max- I'm 5'10")

(I have noticed that I have gotten more headaches on my cycle recently, but I haven't attributed that to paleo as I got hit by a drunk driver recently and suffered a TBI.)

taking extra fish oil right before/during my period seems to help me.

I'd look into adding progesterone during the second half of your cycle, post ovulation. Like days 16-28.
