Are avocados one of the lesser-offending FODMAPS foods?

I know that avocados contain polyols which are the P in FODMAPs. But I can't figure out if they are bothering me or not (I have digestive distress every day, but notice it more if I eat brassicas. Onions and garlic are totally out.)

Do others find that avocados aren't so bad? If you do react to avocados, is there a "safe" amount you find tolerable? Lately I've been eating 1/4 to a 1/2 with lunch.

The first link was for an in vitro study using concentrations of persin likely higher than what is consumed when we eat avocado. The second link (Naked Scientist) was speaking of avocado toxicity in birds and other animals. From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persin "It is generally harmless to humans, but when consumed by domestic animals in large quantities it is dangerous. ... Negative effects in humans seem to be primarily in allergic individuals." One study does not make something truth, though you never know... persin may be the next gluten. Without more data, guacamole!! :)

Never bothered me. It's unlikely you are sensitive to ALL Fodmaps. It might also be true something in avocados (like the fat) makes them easier to digest.

I dont tolerate a bunch of garlic very well but here in southern california I eat about 2-3 avocados per day as they fall off the trees here. I wouldn't worry about it, I can find something wrong with just about any food if I look hard enough.

You've got to eat something.

I wish.

Of course, it is all very personal, but if I want to eat my husband's yummy guacamole (sans onions), I need to take a TUMS afterwards... unless it is just one bite!

If you're having problems and can't figure out what it is then you might try removing avocado. Unfortunately avocado is something on my no-no list of big offenders. I had removed almost everything else (FODMAPS) and I kept getting dizzy episodes, foggy brain, immediate exhaustion and gasto issues and they didn't stop till I took out avocado, butternut and spaghetti squash. Haven't gotten those issues back since I cut them out. I LOVE avocado. It was a very sad day when I realized it was definitely hurting me. Maybe someday I will be healed enough on the inside to tolerate it again in small amounts. Perhaps if you remove it from your diet for a while and then sit down and eat some you'll have a better answer for yourself. We're all different after all.

I ate tons of garlic and onions prior to paleo and now realize I can't tolerate them either. So weird I was just eating so randomly before I didn't notice. Anyway, I don't think I react to avocado. I also don't notice much of an issue with kale. Garlic is just the worst though, I was assuming the inulin.

I don't have any issues that I've noticed. I don't eat them consistently, but I've had 1 a day sometimes in my omelettes before. Maybe look into more probiotics?

Avocados contain a fungicide that causes significant DNA damage in blood cells, kills myocardial cells, heart cells, and I am not sure if we regenerate myocardial cells very well or at all, and other damage.

Also I have read that it is better to kill cells than to alter them significantly, in regards to persin and many other substances, because this creates and spreads chemical messages that cause cancer and many other problems.

Here is a couple of pages to read more information on it. And I would find the studies right now but I am a bit lazy lol. ( http://nutritionfacts.org/videos/are-avocados-bad-for-you/) ( http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=2004.0)
