I can't swallow betaine hcl capsules, is it fine to chew it?

I'm trying to test my stomach acid levels. I bought some betaine hcl and i was going to use it today. when i tried to swallow in the beginning of the meal no matter how hard i tried i couldnt swallow. eventually after 5 minutes it broke and i was scared having all that acid in my mouth so i spit it out. was it safe to have swallowed it anyway? if i cant swallow capsules is it okay to chew them first? Ive spent $20 on this and i dont want it to go to waste. because my health problem i think is pretty bad (extreme fatigue) ill resort to having to chew the capsule as long as its not that bad. it said on the bottle not to chew it though.

Did you take it with lots of water? If not, this will help it go down a lot easier.

Noooooooooooooo! Ouchy, you don't have the protection for the same PH in your throat and mouth that you do in your stomach.

No, I don't think the ends justify the means. Maybe others will have other suggestions for how to get the capsule down but have you tried burying it in a teaspoon (or more) of butter or coconut oil?

i know its probably bad for my teeth, and maybe bad for the parts of my digestive system before the stomach, but i was wondering if the ends justify the means, if you get what im saying.

I found this on the web (emphasis mine):

Polly: Many of us have found that adding an hydrochloric acid supplement is helpful. If you need it, it is very important because higher acid levels not only are important for digestion, but they help keep the yeast and bacteria levels down. Also, there is something called the digestive cascade --- stomach acid triggers the pancreas to release its enzymes and bicarbonates, and it also triggers the release of bile. Without the trigger of enough stomach acid, the whole digestive system suffers.

Jane: What is the test for low stomach acid? I suspect this may be one of my problems and want to check it out.

Polly: One of my doctors suggested that I just try a little hydrochloric acid (HCL) and see if it made me feel better after a meal. If you have stomach ulcers, I assume this isn???t a good idea. Also, you should be careful if you are taking medications that might increase your chances of getting a peptic ulcer. Eg, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or cortisone-like drugs. If you try HCL tablets, don???t chew the tablets because they may harm your tooth enamel.

This sounds like a reasonable caution to me whether you're taking capsules or tablets.

No, don't do it.

I have swallowed Betaine pills and then had reflux... trust me when I say it BURNS like hell... and it burns all the way up to your ears.

Depending on where you got them they might take them back. I know I've returned supplements to Whole Foods and other such stores that I didn't like for whatever reason. I would try to go exchange them for a different brand that may be easier to swallow.

Is your problem with swallowing the pills isolated to these specific pills, or do you have problems with swallowing any pills? If it's just these, try to figure out what about them is hard to swallow (smell/taste, size, etc). If it's ALL pills you have trouble with, try to look into how people have solved that problem (Google probably has some hits).

Try having an apartif with bitters in it instead if you can't swallow the capsules.

No, you shouldn't do that.
