The purpose/benefits of fasting?...

So I am pretty new to the whole Paleo lifestyle and am still learning quite a bit! I have seen and heard a lot about "fasting" and I am just curious about it's purpose/benefits? I am sure this question have been answered a million times! Thanks for the knowledge!
