No Carb Withdrawal -- What does it mean?

Hey guys-

I just started paleo 4 days ago. I've been eating a lot of meat, eggs, fruit, and nuts, and still trying to find ways to integrate vegetables into my diet every day. Up until I started, I was eating pretty badly but trying to wean myself off of carbs and sugar.

I have experienced no noticeable withdrawal from carbs. I get only minor cravings when looking at pasta or cake or whatever. I don't feel that much better per se, but I have noticed that my usual mid-day drowsiness has gone away.

What does this mean? Was bad food destroying me so much that the withdrawal is simply balanced out by the improvement in diet?

For what it's worth I've also been working out harder than usual and allowing myself 9+ hours of sleep per night.

UPDATE: Low carb flu has set in around the 10th day of fairly strict paleo after feeling fine the first 9 days. Felt weak at my workout, then felt lethargic and down afterward (I normally feel very good for several hours afterward). A few hours later, I started getting runny nose, sneezing, stuffy head, etc.

Btw it sounds like your delayed "low carb flu" was just a normal flu or a cold given the prominent runny nose, sneezing, stuffed up head etc.

I never noticed any withdrawal symptoms from carbs. I just noticed not being hungry constantly.

Actually I bought a thing of dried, unsweeteened apples at one point and started scarfing them down, and then I started sneezing. That was weird.. I don't think my body liked the sugar.

Average of 2 servings a day if you include berries. So actually not that much fruit.

That was my first thought, too.

Didn't bother me at all in the first week. Stay tuned. You might have no withdrawal symptoms, or you might have them later.

you might be eating too much protein, fruit, and not enough fat. Protein can be converted into glucose...or something along the lines of that.

I would suggest adding fat. When I started eating coconut oil (2-4 spoonfulls a day) it took 6 days for my body to finally respond. Didn't have any low carb withdraw...but had a huge almost crazy surge of energy. Could only sleep for 3-4 hours for a few days and had some of my best workouts ever.

Enjoy it, some are affected more than others, you are one of the lucky ones by the sounds of things, plus you are getting exercise & good sleep which will help you massively! the only other thing it could be is you say you are eating a lot of meat fruit etc...depending on how much, you may be getting your requirement of carbs through fruit.

I think it means you are lucky and should go buy a lotto ticket or something :)

It may have to do with how much fruit and nuts you are eating, or you could have weaned yourself off slowly enough to not experience the headaches that I went through.
