Anyone bought from Cognito Farm?

I am looking to purchase a portion of a cow from a local farmer in Starke, FL, Cognito Farm. Has anyone had any dealings with them?

A 1/4 cow is about $600-$750 (80-100 lbs cut and wrapped). Does this sound like a good price?

They also have eggs, pigs, chickens...I would love to get everyone's opinion as this sounds like a great farm to get involved with, but it is my first venture with buying from a local farmer.

I had a standing order for their eggs, cream, and beef everytime they came to the market. Unfortunately they got out of the dairy side of things. Eggs were also good to go!

Thanks! I live in Orange Park. I'm planning a visit to their farm next month for one of their tours. Did you ever try their eggs?

I spoke with them at the Beaches market a while back, and was very impressed. Good info!

Buy from Cognito in confidence.

I lived in Jacksonville, FL for the last 4 years, and they were my #1 goto farm for 100% grass fed products. They came to our farmers market on bi-weekly basis, and were one of the best vendors there.

I have been to their farm personally many times, and they have the health of the animals and customers in the forefront of their business practices.

I visited Cognito Farm during "tour de farm" day sponsored by Slow Foods First Coast and was very impressed with their farm. Clean, well-run, high quality. I buy eggs, beef and chicken from them. I do not know if they offer this at their farm, but when they come to market in St. Augustine they also offer some goat cheese products, made from raw goat milk - very good, that they bring from a Glades Ridge Goat Farm.

I can get grass fed beef here in Alberta for $4.50/lb cut and wrapped (so $450/100 lbs) so your price is a bit high to me. I get pastured eggs for $5/dozen. Even though it is a little on the high side I would always encourage supporting local, small scale farming.

Chris, where do you get your grass fed beef from? I am in Alberta as well. I have found some local sources but it's nice to have options.

depends on the cuts, that sounds about right though. ground beef is usually 5$ a lb or so. steaks usually 6-7$ and the filet mignon cuts are sometimes upwards of 20$. so 600-750 sounds like a fair price. not cheap, but fair.

I can offer you one price comparison. My grass-fed source sells a 1/4 cow for $3/lb, versus the $7.50/lb you mentioned.

Nonetheless, if Cognito Farm is your only local source then there's not much you can do other than mail order.
