I think it depends on which grain and which legume. Wheat is deadly, but many people on this very site eat white rice with no ill effects. Legumes, I guess, depend more on preparation. Soaking improves digestibility, and so does cooking with a strip of kombu. Suffice to say, using these two methods will give better results than not. If you're asking for budget purposes, white rice would be the least harmful.

Rice + Beans = Grains + Legumes = Complete Protein;

Complete Protein > Incomplete Protein;

Therefore Both;

One word: Chili

Other than that, gluten makes all the argument for me. Beans can be soaked - which removes most lectins, and then cooked, which also inactivates most lectins. Gluten? Yeah. Good luck getting that out.

I dont see health benefits in either one, so id go by taste. I like pasta way better than i like a can of beans!

Adding to what Cavebitch (her name) said, proper(ish) preparation of legumes is common. Good luck getting Weston A. Price approved bread at the random restaurant. Also, the paleo by food category thing just doesn't make sense. Watching your thyroid? Then that bowl of raw kale you're about to eat is worse for your goal than ice cream. Green peas look healthy? Too bad they're legumes. It makes more sense to look at each food on a case by case basis. Let's not forget that 'sides gluten, nuts have more of (some of) the anti-nutrients that makes paleos avoid grains and legumes than grains and legumes.

Rice is the only grain it eat and it's okay for me in small quantities. As for legumes, green beans are okay but I can't seem to digest beans so I avoid them.
