[META] How to tell if you are a Paleo Dummy™

Answered on September 12, 2014
Created December 12, 2011 at 4:56 PM

I was having a conversation a few months ago with an obnoxious, ghee-loving friend of mine. Discussion drifted towards the views of different paleo experts. We ended up calling certain paleo experts "dummies". In this context, calling someone a "dummy" is the ultimate in compliments, roughly meaning someone who is very clever but doesn't flaunt it. The preeminent example was Paul Jaminet. It strikes me that this label doesn't just apply to experts, but to paleo "lay people" as well. Are you a Paleo Dummy???? Use this handy questionnaire to find out.

  1. If someone is new to paleo or nutrition in general, and they ask a dumb question, are you nice to them, rude to them, or somewhere in between?

  2. Do you enjoy helping people?

  3. Estimate your total quantity of nutrition knowledge (let's call this "x"). Now estimate how certain and definitive the tone of your online commentary is (let's call this "y"). Is the quantity [x/y] high or low?

  4. How curious are you about other people's viewpoints? Sort of, moderately, or very?

  5. Do you ever change your viewpoint on things?

  6. How often do you say "Thank you", "Thanks", or "Credit goes to..."?

The questionnaire doesn't have a strict grading sheet, but you get the point. If you are kind, smart, and open-minded, you don't fit the mold of an almighty guru, but that of a Dummy???. I think we are all to some degree Dummies???, by virtue of participating in an online discussion forum that helps people with nutrition/exercise/health related issues. But we can all strive to perfect our Dummy??? natures. Being nice, respectful, and thoughtful is soooooooo paleo!

I am going to be bold and say that I am proud to be a member of the No Name PaleoDummies??? club.

  1. If someone is new to paleo or nutrition in general, and they ask a dumb question, are you nice to them, rude to them, or somewhere in between? I'm extremely nice, we've all asked dumb questions especially when new. Its how you learn and grow. I might give a little tease, especially when the all inclusive "we" is used, but will finish with a normal reply. I promise that I have never used "douche canoe" in a response yet.

  2. Do you enjoy helping people? Yes. Yes I do.

  3. Estimate your total quantity of nutrition knowledge (let's call this "x"). Now estimate how certain and definitive the tone of your online commentary is (let's call this "y"). Is the quantity [x/y] high or low? This was a bit difficult as to me, I feel that Paleo nutrition knowledge is different than just regular run of the mill nutrition knowledge, so I think I am medium x for food and high y for commentary for what I do know.

  4. How curious are you about other people's viewpoints? Sort of, moderately, or very? I think it depends on the viewpoint. If it's constructive and interesting, then very. If it falls into an elitist category, then sort of.

  5. Do you ever change your viewpoint on things? Again, I'm all about constructive dialog and interesting points of view, so if corrected, and if I agree, am forward thinking enough to adjust my viewpoint. I'm definitely not perfect and enjoy learning new things. I'm definitely open-minded enough to enjoy others viewpoints and opinions if they differ from mine. Food for thought, you know?

  6. How often do you say "Thank you", "Thanks", or "Credit goes to..."? In the real world? All the time. In PH? I do my best to upvote all PH posts that I put a reply to as I think that is a nice thanks to someone who takes the time to ask a question. Also, unless I accidentally miss someone, I make sure to acknowledge anyone who replies to one of my PH posts.

Thank you for the question, Kamal! You are a superior dummy.

EDIT - since douche-baggery is Neolithic, maybe this is one case where Paleolithic re-enactment is a good thing. There are a lot of holier-than-thou dicks floating around at times. Maybe I resemble those remarks too. Sorry if that has ever been the case.

I don't think the paleohacks site supports LaTEX so I can't post my entire calculation. I'll post a rough estimate anyway, although it lacks the precision I would SO like to bring to this answer.

  1. if N= nice and R= Rude, there are three letters in between, (O,P and Q). I'd have to say I'm Q, because I wouldn't want to be P,O,R or N.
  2. The question is a little too open-ended for a succinct response. I'll have to say that with algebra, the answer is yes, and leave it at that.
  3. these UNITS don't match?? Please. Quantity of nutrition knowledge? hmmm. oh, hell, 10. Definitiveness of tone? how about 5? that would make x/y= 2. Nice round number.
  4. Curiosity? well, if S=sort of, M=Moderately, V=Very, then I would be V, since I don't want to be S&M.
  5. Do I change viewpoints? Certainly. Every time I move. That would be yes.
  6. How often do I say Thanks? Thank you? credit goes to? So far, 3. thanks for this post? That makes 4.

SO, assuming simple multiplication, my total Dummy??? score (call it D???) = 8QVyes^2

  1. If someone is new to paleo or nutrition in general, and they ask a dumb question, are you nice to them, rude to them, or somewhere in between? Usually nice, sometimes rude - but then I regret it later.

  2. Do you enjoy helping people? Yes. I often say "I'd like to help you out. Which way did you come in?"

  3. Estimate your total quantity of nutrition knowledge (let's call this "x"). Now estimate how certain and definitive the tone of your online commentary is (let's call this "y"). Is the quantity [x/y] high or low? Let's see. I know 43 things, of which 17 are false... Maybe 0.4? Is that bad? Oh crap!

  4. How curious are you about other people's viewpoints? Sort of, moderately, or very? I'm very curious to find out why other people have got it all wrong.

  5. Do you ever change your viewpoint on things? What do you mean the carb-insulin hypothesis is wrong? But Type 1 diabetics are skinny! La-la-la-la! I can't hear you!!!

  6. How often do you say "Thank you", "Thanks", or "Credit goes to..."? Credit goes to who, again? Oh. Thanks Kumar for this lovely quiz. (Does that one count?)

Can only speak out of my own experience... don't know if I'm a "Dummy" or not, but here are my responses:

If someone is new to paleo or nutrition in general, and they ask a dumb question, are you nice to them, rude to them, or somewhere in between?

I don't think there -are- any 'dumb questions', so I guess, in general, I tend to be pretty nice. I try to consider how people's questions may come out of their own experiences... and remember that my experiences may be completely different. I think most questions deserve good answers, even if they seem sort of hostile or argumentative on the surface.

Do you enjoy helping people?

Yes, very much.

Estimate your total quantity of nutrition knowledge (let's call this "x"). Now estimate how certain and definitive the tone of your online commentary is (let's call this "y"). Is the quantity [x/y] high or low?

I'm not sure on this one. I have a lot of knowledge, but it's biased (naturopath/homeopath/midwife... so not really nutrition-school material), so I try to take that into consideration. I guess, where my experiences are concerned, I'm pretty definitive... but where it's theoretical, I'm pretty open to the possibility that my theories may not be the only game in town... and that they ARE theories, so I'm not really sure where my ratio lies.

How curious are you about other people's viewpoints? Sort of, moderately, or very?

I'm always curious. I think that's what drew me away from the CW on just about everything in my life, from spirituality to childbirth to health and on to genetically-supportive nutrition

Do you ever change your viewpoint on things?

Yes, if I learn new information -- I almost always test things out on myself for a bit before I talk about it, though -- and then make sure that I am pretty clear, when I talk about it to other people, that I let them know that it worked for me... but that doesn't mean it will work for everyone (except some version of genetically-supportive nutrition... which I think is pretty universal) -- if they want to know more, I try to help them figure out how to do their own experiments, if they can't sort out a plan on their own.

How often do you say "Thank you", "Thanks", or "Credit goes to..."?

I try to remember to give credit where credit is due, and respect when someone else does some pretty incredible work -- and there are a lot of people in this community who do some really awesome work.
