Stomach ache from bacon?

Hey,

everytime after eating bacon I get a bad stomach ache. The bacon is organic quality from my farmers market, but it tastes really salty after frying it. Could it be a problem with the salt? And when, what kind of bacon should I ask for?

So it sounds like fatty meat doesn't sit well with you. I say avoid and get your fat from butter and coconut oil.

It does take adjustment to up your fat. Just increase it slowly.

Could be a problem with fatty meat. But should it be? Most guys here are praying eating those things. Should I get used to slowly or avoid?

Thanks for your reply. Butter and coconut oil are really no problem, its just the thing with bacon and, I believe, with fatty beef-cuts. Should I get used to slowly or avoid completely, whats your opinion?

Tried it yesterday, the bacon has a really bad taste afterwards.

I like the idea of using bacon to gauge various things. Maybe we could make bacon barometers and calipers and things like that and take science by storm.

Lindsay, pancetta is actually cured (with salt, pepper, spices, and often nitrates like regular bacon). You can find a "dolce" variety that is not smoked ("affumicata").

If you get a stomach ache from eating it, don't eat it. If it is too salty, just buy pork belly instead, which is the same cut, just not cured. But this is pretty much a no brainer--if you react badly to eating something, just don't eat it, even if it is super delicious like bacon. Bacon doesn't actually provide anything essential, besides the aforementioned deliciousness, so just stop asking for bacon.

Before you cook the bacon what I do to fix that is ssoak the bacon for twelve hours in purified water. Change the water after 6 hrs. Then cook and taste it. Reverse osmosis on the cheap and it takes 75% of the salt out.

Bacon has a lot of fat, sometimes depending on how much fat you eat at once you can shock your system, Peter on Hyperlipid has addressed this before but I don't have the link handy. Usually this is more of a problem if your eating cream or butter or another pure source of fat. For example I ate two sticks of melted butter at one point and felt nauseous.

Don't make yourself sick from eating too much fat. Enjoy every savory bite!

I use bacon as a guage for how much sodium I should be eating, since I eat bacon almost everyday, it works out great. If my daily bacon tastes too salty, it means my body is way too close for its limit for sodium. If I keep eating it I will get a stomach ache too. However if the bacon doesn't taste salty, I eat my usual amount (about 5 oz). The bacon that suites me best is uncured honey bacon. Pederson farms. Another option is that you aren't digesting fats very well. But the stomache ache thing would hold true for butter and other fats. Listen to your body!

Time to self-experiment.

How do you do with other very fatty meat? It could be a problem of not being accustomed to high fat. The remedy for that is increasing your intake gradually.

Or it could be low stomach acid. To test that you could try taking HCl - the capsules, not the tablets. Start with one after a meal, and increase by one with every meal until you feel a mild burning sensation. Then drop back one. Gradually your digestion should improve, and you will feel the burn with fewer capsules. If this isn't the problem, you'll feel the burn with the first attempt.

RG73's suggestion of pork belly would let you know if it is the curing agents that bother you.

Good luck. It would be a shame to have to avoid bacon!
