I've been avid, consistent avocado buyer for about 2 years now. They have been ripe, underripe, and occasionally just bad. Starting earlier this Summer, they have ALL been bad, organic and conventional, in all markets. It seems that they are picked incredibly unripe, and then instead of ripening, they just rot. I taste them at various stages of ripeness, and they taste and smell disgusting. This has consistently been the case for the past 2-3 months in the Northeastern US. This has never happened before.
What gives? I want my avocados back!

I can relate! I am in OC and Albertson, Ralph's, Vons and even WF sometimes fail. But I am used to seek out those "almost ripened" ones. Not good lately...hate to throw them away. So what has worked for me without fail is intentionally buying the unripe hard-as-a-rock single avocados in Trader Joe's (not the ones in set of 6)...let them sit on the counter and ripen, usually about 3 days - freshest I had them in a while, and dependable.

I've had months where all the Avocodos I got were bad but I attributed it to bad luck. I live in California so ours are either grown locally or driven across the boader from our Southern neighbor. In this case I'd give the same advice ad CD though. Look for some nice Mexican Avocados and if they're bad, check the brand and look for another brand. Buy in small batches from many sources until you find good ones, then go back the next day and load up on ones at different stages of ripeness to last you a week or two.

I live in DC. And actually thought the spring avocados were quite good. I typically look for the West Indies Avocados that you can find at whole foods/ wegmans/ some farmers markets.
If you are getting the Hass, that's a Guatemalan, and are better cold weather fruits -- so I typically will look for Hass in October.
Ultimately, US grown avocados are not quite as good as the Mexican/ Southern American grown ones. You may want to look for imported avocados if you are having problems with the US ones.
