Weight loss and sagging skin, why do some get it and others don't?

Is there some scientific reason why some people get sagging skin with weight loss and others don't? Why the excess skin isn't simply used by the body for its needs such as through autophagy or other mechanism?

Wow, downvotes. I guess people just disregard science as it suits them. :-/ @jake - if "excess skin" is defined as *only* excess dermis and epidermis with a minimal&healthy veneer of underlying fatty tissue (which is what someone who is lean from losing weight that would be like), then again it's simple: pinch the perceived "excess skin" - if it exceeds 2-4mm, then it's not just skin. I still give the caveat that it takes time for skin to readjust, but for the most part, and for what most people loosing weight would care about, "loose skin" just doesn't exist chronically, and not a concern.

As I mentioned already above, I don't have excess skin. I am seeing it in others.

This is not about me, I lost 35-40 pounds in 3 months. No skin problem. An uncle of mine lost 50 over 12 months and has some droopy skin. Was it age? Was it other nutrients in our diets? Was it exercise?

Where I have seen people with excess skin be more likely a problem are usually where they started with a few hundreds pounds of excess weight, so much skin they needed surgery to remove it. But I have seen other cases where people had been equally overweight and lost equal amounts of weight not have such an excess skin problem.

um, somtimes observation goes a long way beyond whatever documentation you're searching for. this phenomenon exists.

I have noticed a big improvement in the elasticity, texture of my belly skin (I am 49) after regular bone broth and liver. Zinc & C are supposed to help, too.

You presume that sagging or excess skin after weight loss actually exists. As a chronic condition, this just has never been documented.

If you have just dropped 40 pounds in a few months, then give it time; skin is elastic, and will eventually go back to taut.

My favorite example is this: pinch the skin on the back of your hand - you get about 2-4mm. There is practically no fat there. If you can pinch more than that elsewhere, then it's not skin that is sagging, but plain old flab.

I have heard that doing sufficient weight training while losing weight helps minimize this. That if the weight is lost through diet and cardio exercise alone that this excess skin can happen. But even doing weight training after the weight loss can help "stregthen" the fibers that hold the skin to the body and help with sagging skin according to what I have read.

A difference in skin elasticity between individuals could be one factor.
& as we age our skin becomes less elastic, again this will be variable between people.

Anondson, loose skin exists, but it's also curable.... Assuming you've lost the weight naturally.

People who have weight loss surgery have had documented "excess skin" that required abdominoplasty to remove. But this is rare, and many doctors believe that with added time the surgery many not be necessary.

Then there's also just plain old age. There are documented examples of lost elasticity due to age, especially in response to weight loss (i.e. young, healthy people can loose the loose skin more quickly).

My guess is that within a year your excess skin (if it's excess skin and not some subcutaneous fat) will be gone without surgery.
