Autoimmune - paleo and still feel crap

I have been primal/paleo for almost a year, by that I mean I ate kefir, yogurt, fat and otherwise paleo. No grains, legumes and minimal nuts (only macadamias and a few Brazil nuts). My background, I was an alcoholic until 4 years ago, smoked pot, high stress, and ate a high carb whole foods diet with some meat. I Also have chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and suspected hashimotos, polycystic ovaries and breasts and my bones crack and my joints ache at every move. I also get bad headaches and am always trying to crack my neck to relieve but it doesnt work, I go to a chiro which is not helping a great deal. Over 15 years I have tried just about every alternitave therapy and conventional doctors, no one has really helped. Only a week ago I decided to really go hard on an autoimmune diet because I still felt terrible eating a pale/primal diet (better but still awful). I now only eat meat, bone broth, ,sardines, salmon, gelatin, sauerkraut, kefir, greek yogurt, tumeric, seaweed, green tea, coconut oil, animal fat, liver and oysters. I walk most days and try to do 5 essential movements when I am up to it and yoga. I supplement with magnesium spray on my skin, Vit D drops, Fish oil, Grapefruit seed extract, Betaine HCL and Vit C with zinc. I have been a week on this eating plan and still feel terrible, I have a headache and am foggy as I tyoe this. I am 39 years old female. Anyone have similar health problems and any ideas how to heal? And what I may be doing wrong? Cheers.

I think I would add in veggies and some fruit. It seems like they contain so much in the way of nutrients and fiber that they have got to be beneficial. Maybe there are some veggies that don't irritate your gut as much? I think getting rid of all dairy for a bit makes sense too. As mentioned above, I would also eliminate your supplements for a month and try to just eat veggies, meat and some fruit.

I think it's upside down, Soporificat : your thyroid issues, or at least what's causing them, make it harder for your body to produce lactase.

If I eat any dairy, within 24-48 hours I experience joint pain, foggy brain, exhaustion, and anxiety. I'm also pretty convinced that my thyroid problems (for which I have to take Armour) were directly caused by auto-immune attacks triggered by dairy.

Dairy can be a big culprit for some people. You can have an auto-immune response to casein and/or whey. Fermenting the dairy doesn't get rid of the proteins, so if you have a problem with them you will still react even if you are eating yogurt/kefir.

Hate to limit you even more than you already are-- but have you tried eliminating both eggs and dairy? Perhaps try eliminating one (or, preferably, both) for 30 days and see how you feel. Best of luck to you.

I would not eat veggies, they screw up my guts a bit too (not that much), but they definitely don't help me.

I'd look into Ray Peat, Sally. My story sounds a lot like yours though I'm a 20-yo guy, I was alcoholic too (I never was a big guy but somehow could tolerate liters of beer without too many issues), I did this protocol for 8 months. While it did cure a lot of my problems, I came from a horrible diet, so that shouldn't be surprising. After a couple of months I started feeling awful. I suspected hashimotos too. Some advice : cut the fish oil and unnecessary supps (some of those are probably allergenic), re-introduce sugar (fructose is AWESOME!), salt in higher amounts, coffee and maybe dairy.

No vegetables at the moment. I seem to react to all plant food as my gut is all screwed up. Do you think I should add veg? I was trying the primal parent diet she used to heal herself, totally carnivore. Thought I would give it a shot as nothing else has worked so far.

I had celiac for years and now have MS. My greatest allies have been paleo, low dose naltrexone, and four-day fasts.

The fasts have been crucial in curing my gut. This is what I did:

-Purge the gut of all contents on day one. Just how the tongue and mouth heal themselves in no time, the gut wants to as well. We just need to stop irritating it. I used smooth move tea but this can be painful. -Mint tea and lemon juice to your heart's content. -Probiotics, candidase, and virastop 2-3X regular dose per day. I'd take your other vitamins if I was you, though absorption may be minimal. -Lots of full body sunshine and intentional gut thoughts.

some b-vitamins? Iodine for the thyroid & female stuff - Iodoral is the brand I take. I'm just finding I'm sensitive to molds - I've dealt w/headaches and foggy head for ages & it could be from so many different things, though. Might need some thyroid replacement hormone. I'm about your age, w/a lot of similar issues.

I'm short on time right now; others might have more thoughts.

i too have a similar story. first and foremost, i'd go and get some lab work done. i just found out i was off the charts low in vitamin D. so, it could be something you aren't even focusing on. my hormones look good, my thyroid was borderline, my (paleo) diet was ok. but, just mega dosing with vitamin d, even though i was already taking a little, has helped. for me, my dr really urged me to cut out the nuts and the dairy. dairy can be insulinogenic, so, you should void it with pcos as we tend to be insulin resistant anyway. fermented foods mess with my guts too, so, i take a probiotic. you could also make your own water kefir if you are so inclined or just find something besides dairy. i started out late 2010 with primal right after i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and it worked really damn well for me, but, starting last year in the fall, i just started steady gaining weight. i have put on 25 lbs since then, couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. oh, and went from mtn biking, riding my bike 70 miles, mma, trail running, and whatever else i felt like having fun with whenever i felt like it to not being able to complete a 12 minute HIIT workout. so, i knew something was wrong, and i hope i have it figured out. it's been a week for me. but, the take away is, find a good dr.

Maybe all those fermented food are given you a hard time? I cannot eat those as well as avocados or salmon due to my histamine intolerance. Investigate that!
