Anxiety Disorder Advice

My significant other suffers from an anxiety disorder that is very common in his family. His doctor said that he has a chemical imbalance and he takes a daily low dose pill to help control the anxiety. For the most part, the pill controls the anxiety well but occasionally (once every 3-5 months) the medicine does not work sufficiently and he goes through a few day period of intense anxiety and panic attacks. He eventually takes Xanax and then he goes back to normal.

He does not eat paleo but he eats very healthy. Most of his diet is made up of fruits, veggies, healthy meats, rice, and greek yogurt. He will regularly have non paleo snacks such as wheat thins or fig Newtons but these snacks make up a very minor part of his diet compared to the healthy stuff. He runs and lifts weights a few times a week.

Does anyone know anything about how to help panic disorders or if there is anything that can be done? Any exercise routines or vitamins that can help a bit or advice in general? The panic attacks are not started by stressful triggers but can happen for absolutely no reason at all.

Well I have had some experience with this living with soemone who suffers the same. First thing I would say is, he may not be able to put his finger on it when it happens but something that he thinks about or is experiencing is causing the attacks... but that was not your question so here it goes.

He needs to avoid caffein and alcohol, very impotant. He should supplement with B vitamins and/or foods rich in B vitamins. Always eat breakfast with majority of food being protein. Regularly eat complex carbs such as starchy fruits, sweet potatoes, Kale, Spinach, etc. They increase seratonin in the brain which helps to calm the person. Avoid simple carbs and processed sugars at all costs.

Finally, lots of exersize, in particular High Intensity Interval Training. Again we are talking about seratonin, HIIT has a significant effect on fat loss, cardio improvement, increased Testosterone and most importantly increased seratonin production.

I hate saying this on Paleohacks, but it has also been said that whole grains have a significant effect on reducing anxiety, but I think that if you follow the other dietary and exersize reccomendations he should do much better.
