To take the antibiotic or not?

I caught a Herpes virus and it had spread from my throat to my nose and ear canal. The blisters are painful and some rupture causing unbearable pain for a couple hours. I was prescribed an antiviral ointment to apply as well as an antibiotic called cefadroxil 500mg to prevent a 2ndary bacterial infection. I already have compromised gut flora and taking it would wreck havoc on my gut. Is it necessary for me to take the antibiotic now or could I wait till I have a bacterial problem before I take it?

I will be taking probiotics during and after the antibiotics if I take them.

I am also taking Advil to reduce the pain so that's even more to add to harming my gut.

Thanks for any advice.

Keep Acetaminophen to less than 3 grams a day and you'll be fine unless you have underlying Liver issues or drink huge amounts of alcohol. NSAIDS are super hard on the GI tract so avoid if possible. Also, if it were me, I would hold off on the antibiotic for now, prophylactic antibiotics may or may not help ward off future infection in the open sores.

it is totally awesome. i had my dad use some topically for a terrible cyst (it was oozing) on his neck and it was gone the next day.

Re. Acetaminophen, just be careful not to take too much in a day. Acetaminophen kills a decent amount of people each year due to overdosing.

Take it, and then work on re-building your gut. You can also take S. boulardii one hour before meals.

If it were me, I'd skip the antibiotic and take 40,000 IUs of D3 for 3 days.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) has less impact on the gut than Advil (ibuprofen).

And then I would get my D3 level tested & sun/supplement to a blood level of 60-80 ng/ml to support my immune system.

A crazy person would skip the antibiotic, a relatively sane person would take it.

Since you posted the question here I will assume you are crazy.

I wouldn't take an antibiotic for purely preventive reasons. By the same reasoning you should take antibiotics when you get blisters from badly fitting shoes or, say, if you got tangled in brambles and got bad scratches. I don't think the cost-vs-benefit balance here works.

But then I have a functional immune system which is not true for everyone.

....Take the antibiotic, make sure to take probiotics to keep your gut flora healthy.
