That is really sad. It is a tough decision. I found lots of info here: http://www.bing.com/search?q=time+to+put+dog+to+sleep&go=&qs=n&sk=&sc=1-24&form=QBLH

I use three questions.... Can they walk, can they eat, can they poo? If they cant do one of these by themselves, then its time to ask the bigger question about quality of life.

I think you will know when your companion is too ill to enjoy life any more. It's a very hard thing to have to do - a big responsibility.

We've had to visit this issue twice over the past 3 years. I am sorry that you're going through this.

The two old friends that we had to let go presented different issues..... vastly different. However, at the end, it came down to the same thing: we just knew it was time. I wish I could be less vague than that, but we just knew.

One of ours was very ill and old, and she wasn't coming back. That was a somewhat "easy" decision (but not really). The other one wasn't sick and she wasn't immobile or in critical condition. She was simply very, very old and was ready to go. On a daily basis, she was going through the motions for us. This sounds bizarre but we really owed her the compassionate end to her life and not have her keep on simply for ourselves. We really had to labor to get some food in her and to pee/poop.
