Ketosis Question/ VLC Question

In order to go into ketosis how few grams of carbs does one have to eat? LOL, I could not think of a good way to phrase this question. I guess what I mean is: will I go into Ketosis if I am eating 200 g of carbs a day? 100? 50? Does anyone know?

A couple of days of extreme carb restriction. Intense exercise helps too - you're basically trying to empty your liver glycogen stores. The emptier your liver, the deeper your ketosis.

Wow! 55 lbs, that is amazing! I mainly want to get my eating under control and I think that when I eat low carb it's easier for me.

Would you know how long it takes to use up the glycogen stores and go into ketosis? and if exercising helps to hasten this?

It's not a black and white "in or out thing": if you eat less than 100g of carbs a day then you're in ketosis to some degree.

Ketosis depends only on your brain's requirement for fuel. Without ketones, your brain needs about 100-130g a day of glucose to meet it's energy needs (this is true for most people on a regular "balanced" high-carb diet). Your brain is selfish, and gets first call on any glucose in your system (before muscle or liver storage).

Ketosis occurs when you don't injest enough carbohydrate to fuel your brain (ie <100g), when this happens your liver breaks down free fatty acids to form ketones, which are an alternative energy source for your brain (and other cells in the early stages of ketosis).

In deep ketosis your brain's glucose requirements are redued to about 25g, with the other 75% of its energy coming from ketones. All of that 25g can be generated from protein and fat through gluconeogenesis, so you don't actually need to injest any carbohydrates.

At <50g some people manage to turn ketostix purple, most people can do it at <25g, although if you eat too much protein, you can end up producing glucose through gluconeogenesis, which can decrease the depth of your ketosis.

It depends on the person. Atkins starts people off with 20 grams per day to "make sure" that you get into ketosis. Most (non medical) "ketogenic" diets are less than 50 grams.

The Perfect Health Diet suggests more "safe starches," and supplementing them with ketogenic amino acids and coconut oil.

Well, it undoubtedly is different for everyone, but the general rule of thumb is that under 50g of carbs will get you there.

personally I would go with 25g for 7 days. In my case I kept as low as possible (20g max) and was there within 5 days. First 3 days are hell to be brutally honest, so just bear with it and think of the positives. I started on a Wednesday evening, by the following Monday morning I felt awesome, seriously. Also, make sure you get plenty of Omega-3 (supplements) and a Vitamin D supp. I went with a good quality multi-vitamin supplement too, not fully Paleo, but your brain needs sugars and a low-carb diet can disrupt this balance long term. My wife and I have been on a low carb and 90% Paleo diet since 7th December 2011, so far we've each both lost in the region of 55lbs each !
good luck ......
