Oral Allergy Syndrom - Any Sufferers?

Hey people!

I've been totally paleo for around a year now and I'm never letting go of it.

I'd just like to find out if anyone else has suffered from OAS or Oral Allergy Syndrome?

The allergy/syndrome manifested in me at a relatively young age at around 16 years or so I'd guess. It presented itself as specific sensitivity to raw foods. These raw foods would cause a rash like sensation to form in my mouth, with sometimes visible proof such as reddening of my palette and throat. Foods included fruits, specifically bananas and watermelon, raw nuts and on occasion even salads.

However, after being on the paleo diet for quite some time now the symptoms have next to completely vanished. I now eat raw nuts frequently without any problems as well as the occasional fruit. I'll be expanding my fruit intake gradually.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Keep well! Andrew

I have OAS to some unusual items (anything in the cactus family, turmeric & yellow dye, eggplant, cantaloupe, green bananas, sometimes raw nuts). The cantaloupe & bananas are definitely a cross reaction to my horrific ragweed allergy. I usually just avoid eating these items since I hate getting hives in my mouth. I can, however, eat ripe bananas with no problems.

On the plus side, though, my eczema has almost totally cleared up since starting paleo.

Yup. I used to have a reaction to cherries & it is gone!

I have had sensitivities to a lot of raw fruits since I was very young and that did not abate with paleo. Despite great results in terms of everything else, I have had no improvement with raw fruits, and now have significant problems with raw vegetables as well, particularly carrots and leafy greens. I'm also allergic to essentially all nuts as well as coconut. However, I have no problems with poached fruit and cooked vegetables. Had fairly severe face and body acne as well as asthma and allergies before going paleo, acne is now limited to shoulders and lower back, seasonal allergies and asthma are completely gone (and am on no medication), however the OAS hasn't really budged. ~1.5 years

I have not noticed a major decrease in allergies, but I also don't tend to eat many of the foods I'd had problems with in the past. Last night, I ate frozen pineapple chunks and my mouth is still sore. I can, however, eat fresh pineapple without the same issues, so I'm wondering if something additional was done to these in the packaging process.

Glad to hear you're seeing such a decrease in symptoms. Go slowly on the nuts though.

Exact same thing happened to me, this was the first year in 22 that I didn't need seasonal allergy medication and since OAS is a cross-reactivity issue, I decided to begin testing with the raw fruits, nuts, and vegetables that I previously reacted to. Results: totally fine now!
