whats the reason for so many people being allergic to nuts and peanuts ?

My 3 year old nephew was just diagnosed today with having allergy to tree nuts - he had a reaction to pecans and the allergist said that subsequent reactions would be even worse ( peanuts are fine though ) So my sis had to get him a $100 epipen which will have to be replaced every year and which will have to be with him at all times. Is there any real definite answer as to why this is so prevalent these days? Back in the day we took PbnJ to school all the time and you never heard of anyone being allergic to anything really..so whats goin on!?? did they inject us with peanut allerigies..? hehe jk .. but seriously though-wutup with that ..?

"The leading theory is about hygiene - with less infection thanks to city living, smaller families, vaccines, sanitation, antibiotics, etc., the immune system is less 'busy' with germs and may become more prone to attack harmless food proteins," said Dr. Scott Sicherer, a pediatrics professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in an email.

Sicherer, who did not participate in the latest research, said another theory is that kids receive less vitamin D from sunlight because they are indoors or use sunscreen, and that could alter their immune system responses.

But these remain theories, and no one has proven why allergies are increasing.

Crap..

My wild speculation is that it's due to a simultaneous imbalance and insufficiency of vitamins A and D during development.

source: I don't get sick because of vitamin D supplementation but I do get allergies without concurrent vitamin A supplementation. With both, I have an impenetrable forcefield from the unholy abyss of despair.

I suspect that correcting these things will greatly mitigate existing allergies.

source: recently I was unable to eat most fruit, nuts and shellfish and can now eat them due to vitamin A supplementation. similarly, I don't get hay fever anymore, but I live in the same place as I did then.

Leaky gut maybe? You know due to the whole reason the GAPS diet exists?

I think it is a good question and I suspect the answer is from multiple factors. I would guess: widespread vitamin deficiency, widespread weakening of immune systems, the fact that peanuts are often grown in terrible conditions and are highly processed hence probably contain a lot of toxins, or some combination of the above.

I think it is disturbing that many of the foods that are widely eaten today didn't exist 50 years ago in terms of genetic modifications and processing. You don't need to be a Paleo die hard to think that foods introduced during one generation would run contrary to how humans evolved over thousands of generations.

Who knows, maybe in 1000 years we will all be adapted to eating legumes processed with sugar and served in a jar... or not.

An allergy is an immune response...is it possible that gut-mediated immune issues (I know leaky gut can cause autoimmunity for example) from the modern diet might have something to do with it? Just speculating but it seems plausible on the face of it...

Dysfunctional immune systems. Read up on the Hygiene hypothesis also known as the "Old Friends Theory."
