AHS 2012- Offer your play-by-play commentary here...

Asked on January 11, 2015

What and When

The 2nd inaugural Ancestral Health Symposium is starting later this week in Boston, Massachusetts.

Last year's conference sparked the Taubes vs. Guyenet debate, gave paleo women wet dreams about Erwan Lecorre (do women get wet dreams? I'm dumb.), and provided a fun time for those who attended and cool online lectures afterwards for those that didn't.

How, Why, and To What Extent

The twitter-verse is getting ready with the #AHS12 hashtag-- many paleohackers including Melissa-huntgatherlove and gone2croatan offered excellent commentary last year. I personally plan to tweet irreverant shit throughout the conference, as well as summarize any super-cool lectures (for example, the bar is high for Chris Masterjohn's talk and the safe starches panel with Paul Jaminet).

If you are going, maybe write some stuff here-- reviews of speakers, Boston eateries, the party after the after-party, and anything else that strikes your fancy.

My request is somewhere in the middle of the country. Minneapolis (to haunt the Mayo Clinic, General Mills, Cargill, Supervalu, U of M where Ancel Keys was), Chicago, Indy, KC, Denver/Boulder, etc.

Not sure if they will need to keep to the same schedule (August works well in terms of getting space in schools), but if they do, I would expect the location to be announced in the fall (Sept-Oct).

Nobody knows when. Harvard Media recorded the video and they are planning to sync the presenters' slides in post-production. Hard to say whether they will whip through these because it's summer session or it will take months because there is so much to do. If you didn't attend, friend the AHS Facebook page so you'll know when they are posted.

Could be (the ignoring-Kruse-so-as-not-to-encourage-him tactic), though I doubt it. Could also be not having the BALLS to take a clear, unequivocal stand on something. Melissa (and no, I don't mean to single just her out) personifies the feminine energy in paleo these days - snarky, noncommittal, hipster-ish, too-cool-to-have-actual-opinions, etc. (but REAL quick to clamp down on speech). Had Kruse publicly implicated, say, Robb Wolf, can you even imagine the response? Paleo needs more people with balls (and not just men) - the Robb Wolfs, Richard Nikoleys, Kurt G. Harrises of the world...

I'm not a mod and I don't make the rules. And neither do you. It's a web forum. Most of them have rules. That doesn't sound all that crazy to me. I don't think there's a "news blackout" on Kruse. Rather, I think that people are tired of Kruse and don't want to reinforce his antics by giving him attention. So they're ignoring him, much as they would a disruptive preschooler. Speaking of which, my engaging with you is, I'm sure, giving you just the kind of attention you crave.

wildwabbit, Carbsane posts on here under her the name "Carbsane". As far as I can tell, Shock and Cole Slaw is someone whose account gets repeatedly deleted for asking provocative questions that the mods have explicitly forbidden, then comes back under a new name and asks the exact same questions. Very frustrating for the mods, I'm sure. The majority of of Shock and Cole Slaw's questions seems to revolve around Jack Kruse, so I'd suggest that he broach them directly to Dr. Kruse rather than irritating people around PH.

Jimmy Moore being allowed to moderate a panel was both a setback for paleo and the AHS. It serves to further muddy the waters between 'paleo' and 'low carb' in the minds of many - exactly what a lot of low carbers want.

I would really like to know the source of that slide. Those numbers don't look accurate for pregnant women. My understanding is that the placenta starts producing 200-400 *mg*/day starting at 12 weeks gestation. If that number is not accurate, then it makes me wonder about the rest of the data. And NO progesterone or testosterone in adolescent females? Not very likely!

The whole grain vs grass fed thing basically boils down to the fact that it really doesn't matter that much, health-wise. Obviously as far as animal welfare goes, there is a big difference, but if we get caught up looking at RATIOS only as far as n~3 and n~6, we lose sight of the big picture. We shouldn't let the affordability of grass-fed meat give us reason to not go paleo. It was a really great talk, actually. He (Peter Ballerstedt) talked about Liebig's Barrel in relation to our food (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liebig's_law_of_the_minimum). Getting people off grains is the minimum.

Seen quite a few tweets today from AHS12 that challenge long-held paleo beliefs. For example, this slide from Robb Wolf:

ahs-2012--offer-your-play-by-play-commentary-here...

I don't know what was said or what kind of context there was, but numbers like those really put myths of animal hormones being detrimental to humans to rest.

Other tweets were referring to grass-fed beef being icing on the proverbial cake, replacing neolithic foods with even conventional meats is a positive step.

Or maybe it's an emphasis on not letting perfection get in the way of progress.

A couple of quick thoughts and interesting tnings i learned today.... keith Norris' talk had nothing to do with his abstract of health vs performance which is what i was really excited for.

I really enjoyed chris masterjohn's talk, as expected. I found especially interesting what he said about free radicals only being responsible for about 10% of oxidative damage, and when cells are overloaded they produce oxidants that decrease cellular uptake.

The safe starches debate was interesting tho i dont think anyone's opinions were changed at all.

Linda Frasetto presented more great research showing a paleo diet to be superior to a meditteranean diet.

Rice mRNA can decrease LDL receptor transcription.

Leptin can decrease glucagon.

It's 8:33 on the morning of AHS12. The weather is beautiful. Registration starts in a couple hours, and then come the first three lectures:

  • What Are Humans Adapted For? - Dan Lieberman, Ph.D.

  • The EvoS Diet: Creating a Framework for Testing Hypotheses About Optimal Diet and Social Organization for a Healthy Lifestyle - David Sloan Wilson, Ph.D.

  • Nutrient Density: Sticking to Essentials - Mathieu Lalonde, Ph.D.

I'm moderately excited, but mostly sleepy. Will any vendors be providing chocolate samples? That's the question on everyone's mind. (everyone == me)

Terribly unfortunate to schedule Chris Masterjohn and Gary Taubes to speak at the same exact hour on pretty much the same topic. Sad Fail?

Seemed everyone I follow on twitter attended the Masterjohn speech. Who attended Taubes speech, supposedly he debuted a new speech. Anyone?

I heard the ladies went gaga for the Gary, but didn't hear anything special about the content.

Harrises of the world...

wildwabbit, Carbsane posts on here under her the name "Carbsane".

And regarding Kruse, why the news blackout on the guy? What gets me is that Melissa is acting like someone who's still afraid - but of what?

"[A]asking provocative questions that the mods have explicitly forbidden" You do realize how crazy that sounds, don't you? At least for a site whose whole INTENT is to foster debate.

Anyone know if Melissa was there? If so, that must have been SUPER awkward with Masterjohn. Office romances = always a bad idea.

The AHS website had a page with the hour by hour breakdown of speaker and subject.

My request is somewhere in the middle of the country. Minneapolis (to haunt the Mayo Clinic, General Mills, Cargill, Supervalu, U of M where Ancel Keys was), Chicago, Indy, KC, Denver/Boulder, etc.

Why not just combine it with the Low Carb Cruise?

When they decide where it will be held. They are soliciting proposals from interested parties. I anticipate that we'll hear in Sept or Oct so that the rest of the process (soliciting proposals, identifying speakers, arranging event) can happen in a timely fashion.
