Who's going to AHS12?

Tickets went on sale yesterday for the 2012 Ancestral Health Symposium at Harvard. I must admit, I'm bordering on giddy about this event (only 159 days to go!). First off, despite my mobility issues, I really enjoyed last year's event at UCLA.

But AHS12 is on home turf of sorts for me ... I spent nearly 20 years in Boston, half of that fairly close to Harvard. I think it's an awesome venue, and if you haven't been, Boston and Cambridge are a great destination for other touristy kinds of activities (not to mention you can turn the conference into a longer vacation to the Cape or Martha's Vineyard or head up to Bar Harbor or ... oh, I miss New England!).

I'm pretty impressed at the rate they got at the conference hotel. $209 a night for the Charles is a sweet deal (it's an upscale hotel in Harvard Square just off the Charles river). For folks who register for the symposium, there's an AHS12 Crowdvine site that will enable folks to find roommates to make it even more affordable.

Anyways, who here is definitely going? Who's thinking about it? And what are you looking forward to? A Taubes/Guyenet rematch perhaps?

....and it's on during the Olympics! how dare they, so I doubt I will follow any chatter like last year while it was on - too busy vegging out on my once every four years couch potato olympic fest. I wonder how slow the AHS videos will trickle out this year.....

Annika come find me (unless I scare or infuriate the crap out of you) and I will introduce you to some others and then you'll know people and won't feel alone. That goes for anyone really. Don't pass on this because you won't know anyone. You will know someone so just come.

Me too. I obsessively and jealously followed the live-tweeting last year, and Boston is on a 3-hour drive for me, so how could I pass this up? I won't know anyone there though, so I am worried about feeling like an insecure wallflower/loser. I hope there are social opportunities outside the scheduled sessions.

I agree, the brou-ha-ha gets to be a bit much. But whenever it reaches fever pitch, I just remind myself, "Just. Eat. Real. Food."

Iffy on the pseudo-science we're touting pretty much sums it up for me. I am going though. I just have to be there to see it.

Like Minger said at the summit, Paleo is self correcting. Not many similar movements are, if you want to call it that. I see things that I think are nuts too, but they don't distract from the big picture much.

I'm such a nerd...I left a reminder to myself to get tix first thing yesterday morning, and I almost FREAKED when I couldn't get any. I thought, "Are they already sold out?! Do I have to wait for the lottery?!" But then someone pointed out that they went on sale at noon. So when I got them, I was very, very happy. Immediately got my hotel res too. Now if I could just find airfare for less than $800...grumble

SO looking forward to it. I've never been to Boston, and I hear great things about Cambridge.

For me, the value will be in the socializing and connection-making. We're so fortunate to have a vibrant online community, but meeting these folks and having fun with like-minded Paleos/what-have-yous is a great reinforcement and affirmation of our values. Most of us don't have the luxury of being surrounded by Paleo/ancestral perspectives in our daily lives, so I expect that meeting up a few times a year goes a long way toward filling that gap.

Despite my misgivings I'm going. The first one was so much fun I just couldn't pass this one up.

For anyone on the fence I would encourage you to go. I don't know anyone who went last year who ended up regretting it. You will learn a lot and come back home renewed and reinvigorated. And the entertainment value is incalculable. It's expensive but you do get a lot of bang for your buck.

  1. Outta my price range (registration + flight + hotel + meals), and
  2. Not on a weekend so (since it's not work related) there's no way I'm getting the time off anyways ...

Eh, I would love to go, and am right in the area, but it's out of my price range at the moment. Also, there are some people there I would love to hear, but I'm also a little iffy on some of the pseudo-science being touted around the community as of late. Sooo, probably just catching the videos when they are hopefully available online.

To be quite honest, I switched Paleo off for a while after that post AHS11 flare up. It was too much of a circus, but we get over it.

I might just sign up right now. It's going to be epic.

I'm going! (unless something buggers with the date.) Too bad though, AHS 11' was really my backyard, as I graduated biochemistry at UCLA in 2011.

Talk about going a bit further in 2012...oh well. I'm excited regardless.

What about some PH stickers to put on your ID so people will ask who you are online? Those are fun, especially when you bump into the people you argue with all the time! Got signed up.
