Paleo mentor (if you please)?

Hello all,

So what I'm hoping for is someone who can answer some questions that I have (and more that I am sure I will have along the way)...I have one friend who is paleo...She's been paleo for a few months and she's had great results...I could go to her as well, but I am hoping to keep her available more for when I need support/someone to talk to IRL...

My situation: I've been doing the eating paleo for about a week...I've been doing all the research that I can on the internet...I finally ordered the book Robb Wolf's book on Amazon, so hopefully that will come in soon...I'm female, 30 years old, 207.5 lbs, 5'5.5" and had back surgery a year ago (which makes exercise difficult)...

Basically I'm looking for someone who has been paleo for a decent stretch, isn't going to judge me, and preferably some one who can advise me on what foods to avoid to focus on weight loss...I know there are foods that are paleo that can be cut out to encourage that, but I don't know what they all are, etc...

Anyways, I suppose that sufficiently explains my request...Thank you for your time :-)

I'm sure that is true...I can't wait to read it...I have a mild gluten intolerance as it is (it makes me bitchy and troubles my eczema) so I am looking forward to hearing more about it...Thanks for the info :-) I'll check out that tortilla chip recipe...I looooove chips and homemade salsa, so that'd be awesome!

Also, when you read Robb's book, I guarantee you will never look at gluten (as well as other non-paleo foods) the same way again. After reading it, cutting grains and dairy out of my diet wasn't just because I had to, its because I really don't want that stuff in my body

In our society and especially when you're on a budget, its really hard to go FULL paleo, a.k.a grass fed meat, no additives or preservative in anything, meaning you have to be buying all organic food too. When you're starting out, I suggest just try and cut out grain and dairy, take it out of your daily routine. Once you get that habit down, cutting other things out will be easy, rather than doing everything cold turkey. You'd also be surprised the paleo substitutes you can make (I am currently eating paleo tortilla chips, recipe is on my website, and its a huge cracker craving saver!)

Karma- Just so you know, some folks who post here are new to Paleo, like you. Some of us (like me) have been doing nutrition coaching for a long time--it's a real mix. Ultimately, as CD said, it's trial & error, regardless of your resources.

It's my opinion...Like I said, it hadn't occurred to me that it would be anyone's lively hood to do such a thing...I was looking for a friend, not someone to hold my hand and pick out my meals...You sound like you have other things going on in your life that are upsetting you...Why it would get so far under your skin that a stranger asked for help on a website is beyond me...I really meant no offense

No complex at all. It is irritating when someone posts on a free site, requesting that much more, when all she has to do is use that little search bar in the upper right corner or post a question. Rude and harsh? Whatever. Sarcasm is lost on some people.

Mathgirl-You seem to have some sort of a complex about this...I regularly do things to help others and it didn't even occur to me that it would offend anyone if I asked...I figured people who weren't interested in helping me would do their thing and if I was lucky (or not) I might wind up with a friend...Regardless, you come off in this post (IMO) a little harsh and rude...Perhaps you're having a bad day or have some other thing going on, IDK, but I wasn't being malicious in my request...I had no idea that was something anyone would do for a job...And for the record, I am doing my own research

CD-I am definitely looking forward to getting the book...I have ADD and I find that I absorb information significantly better from a book...Having that concreteness in my hands, knowing that I can flip easily back and forth, highlight items, etc makes the materials much easier for me to make sense of... Thank you for the support...I guess I am just worried about asking "stupid" questions...

Another thing I'm having a tough time figuring out is that everyone has their own idea of what paleo means...And I suppose I will develop my own as well...But I think I'm getting paleo and primal mixed up...As far as I can tell the only difference is that in primal you also do dairy...IDK, I'll figure it out, but it'll be much easier when I have a reference book... Thank you for your kindness :-)

Well, Kate, I wasn't being hateful, I was being a realist. You are looking for a freebie other than what you can glean from this site. Many of us do our own research and don't have time to hold the hand of someone not willing to do their own.

Kate, I understand the financial concerns. Everything you need is on Mark's website, I just find the book better organized. Use the community here. As you have a question, use the search box. Most of my questions were already asked. Something new? Ask away. Good Luck!

I didn't feel like I was asking for a "free personal consultant" or a coach...More someone who wouldn't mind answering a few questions here and there...And definitely wasn't asking for the above hateful response  (not yours)

If you are willing to pay for coaching, you can reach me via my website link on my profile page. Otherwise, you can ask individual questions here. Agree with CD to read Mark Sisson's book.

I am just finishing up my first month on Paleo and I sympathise with your question. It's pretty overwhelming at first and sometimes you just want somebody to help you sort through all of vocabulary and different approaches and help you find what specifically will help you. It's hard to search when you don't even know the right terminology and you only have a vague idea of what it is you need.

It gets easier as you go along. I read Loren Cordain's book and launched out on Paleo and then started reading on the internet and got totally lost. So many conflicting views, so many different diet types and authors, so many acronyms and weird words I had never heard of before. This site really has been a huge help because I can plug in whatever comes up in a Hack that I haven't heard of and search for it right here. Eventually you will be able to sort through all of it I promise.

The biggest thing though with this diet is there is no one right fix. You have to learn to listen to your body and eat what it tells you to eat and avoid what it tells you to avoid. Follow the basic plan and eat meat, fat and veggies and a little fruit and you will see instant results. All the rest is tweaking and only you ultimately can figure out the tweaks you need. Most of us aren't used to listening to our bodies so it may take a bit to hear it and understand but it will happen.

Kate, Read Robb's Book. Then read Mark Sisson's book. Then experiment. You will get lost, and when you do you have an entire community here to answer your questions.

An individual coach is going to be difficult as everyone has different solutions, so it's best to get the community's response, that will give you a few things to try out.

Hey Kate, I think the best bet in your situation is to do a lot of research online. A lot of paleo websites have FAQ's, and this site is also great for asking more personalized questions.

I also have a suggestion, considering your financial situation, and that again is websites! There are tons of blogs out there with recipes and suggestions. If your having trouble buying paleo foods, because they can be more expensive, remember that by cutting out all the crackers and cereals and other packaged foods that you normally buy, buying fresh paleo foods will, in terms of budget, be cheaper, just not the individual items.

The website I work for, the-brazilian-body.com has some recipes, as well as fitness and paleo advice. Feel free to google some, I also found that pinterest had a lot to offer if you search paleo boards.

Good luck (and ignore the mean comments, your making a great choice, and you'll soon find it to be an easy and great life choice)

Hi,

I can be a resource for you. I've been paleo for over 4 months now. I'm 23, 5'4 bf 22%. I learned about paleo after significant research and several years of being sick. I lost over 30 pounds and am in the best shape of my life. I'm not an expert, but I could definitely help you a lot. I've been mentoring several people--my boss, sister and several friends.

On a side note, I thought most responses you got were beyond rude!! Geesh guys!!
