Is anyone else annoyed at the sprayon lubricant ads?

Answered on August 19, 2014

For God sakes, it is an industrial lubricant used on machine threads and parts.

Why am I looking at cake....CAKE! Garlic bread, white rice and buttered popcorn.

This is very triggering. I think these ads are specifically designed to throw Paleos off of their diet. I mean, why advertise machine lubricant on a paleohacks site? Tell me why? We're not exactly a target audience.

I think this is the work of a desperate, jealous, vegan troll!

Anyone else wanna meet me for garlic bread and cake?

If you tell noscript to not allow youtube, the install Downloadhelper, you can just download the youtube videos and watch them outside of firefox. No more ads. And if you want, you can watch the videos while on the go.

Sounds like that should be in /etc/hosts on *nix, OSx included.

Assuming you're using Windows: Start > Run (or in Win7 you can search the programs box for run, its the second choice), type in (without the quotes): "notepad.exe c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts", add those four lines to the bottom of it and save. It should look like this: http://jraney.bizhat.com/hosts.JPG

Adblock Plus also works wonderfully on Google Chrome and Rockmelt (my browser of choice). I don't get anything but Youtube ads, so it's very minimal. I'm so glad not to see Wal-God ads on Facebook anymore!!!

I just bought airline tix on jetblue -- so I'm getting hit with banner ads for Southwest here on PH. Too late, SW!...I don't mind the ads, but I can see where looking at cake and popcorn would be triggering. That's why I avoid cookbooks with sexy food pics. :: stomach growls for cake :: :) :) :)

Haven't seen the lubricant ad - they are targeted to the individual (in theory). Not interested in cake, but garlic bread is a particular weakness. Name the place and time... ;)

Easy fix. Switch to firefox, install Adblock+ and uncheck the box that allows "unobtrusive text ads", install Ghostery, enable all the blocks, install Better Privacy and have it clear out the LSO cookies, and voila, no more crap.

If you're willing to deal with the extra fun, install No Script and allow only the websites that actually need it.

I don't know about iPhones, but there is a Firefox for Androids and it does have Adblock+.

Hell, I'd even check the "Tell Websites I don't want to be tracked" setting under privacy.

While you're at it, switch from google/bing/etc. to something like Start Page which acts as a proxy to google and anonymizes your searches.

Remember, if you didn't pay for a product on the web, you are the product being sold.

There's absolutely no need to put up with this abuse, and if you're willing to do a bit of work, you can avoid it all.

1) The ads are tailored to you based on your browsing history. Google tracks the searches you make and then offers up ads based on your history.

I see ads for musical instruments, because I do searches for instrument parts. If you are seeing ads for industrial lubricants, you probably did some searches for industrial parts at some time.

2) Ad-Block--No!

This site is supported by the advertisements. It's not fair that you should enjoy the benefits of this site (and consume its resources), and then refusing to supporting it financially. That's being a freeloader, plain and simple.

This is a free site, I guess you get what you pay for? I've seen ads for Kraft, Rice Crispies, Bob's Redmill, but also for clothing and automotive things too. The internets has been around for years now, so I guess in all the years its been around I've learned to tune them out.

If you're being triggered by an ad for a food lubricant, maybe you have deeper lying issues with food that you need help for?

I <3 Adblock. :)

I do still see ads when I browse PH on my iPhone. I'm sure there's a fix for it, but since I don't do it that often it doesn't bother me enough to go find one. And sometimes the ads amuse me. Today it's Bob's Red Mill, purveyor of grains, grains, and more grains (but also unsweetened coconut and a few other paleo-friendly things).

The one that got me laughing last night were the ads for Bariatric Choice: "The Leading Source of Bariatric Nutrition." It's frozen dinners for fatties, judging from the looks of the ad. I'm tempted to click through just to see what horrors are in the nutritional info and ingredients lists...

Supporting Paleohacks.com by seeing some ads is not that big of a deal given everything you get for free.

As others, I use adblock, but I enable certain sites (like paleohacks) to show ads. This allows me to be part of their revenue stream, allows me to give a little back. Sites like this can be extremely expensive to run.

I find the ads on this site to be way off their target audience...to the point that it is actually funny. Right now I see an "Online visibility" package to increase traffic to my website that I don't have, motorcycle parts for the motorcycle I don't own or want, and a "shocking video" to show me how I can learn any language I want in only 10 days which I have no desire to do lol. I use adblock on my pc, but I have to deal with them on the iPad.
