What is with the massive amount of censorship on paleohacks?

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created January 11, 2013 at 7:54 PM

Today, a question got closed and deleted because someone was asking who the author of Melissa McEwen's blog was. It's a perfectly legitimate question, because it does not specify anywhere on the blog who the author is.

Even after disclosing that they were not a troll and asking politely not to close the question, some A-holes decide to do the opposite, vote to close, and go even further to delete the question.

This is not exactly a new occurrence on the site either.

Also, the downvoting and voting to close is ridiculous. Roth got 2 downvotes for asking about morning routines. Why? Also, no comments as to why they down-voted.

What's with all the unnecessary censorship? If you're not interested in a serious question that is being asked, just don't answer, or don't upvote. If it is obviously a troll, then sure vote to close, but often times it seems that the closing, down voting, and deleting of questions is absolutely unwarranted.

Why delete or close questions that are not offensive, not trolling, and totally serious?

I have no desire to view this bullshit. The "censorship" seems well placed. I've viewed your links, and just so you know I didn't want to see them. All opinions seem legitimate, but I'm not viewing those sites. I like this one. Take it elsewhere.

I personally have no idea whether or not that is true, or who is flattered by what or who bothers doing what. It sounds like something high school girls would get into, or perhaps the Real Housewives of Cave County. So far as I know, Paleohacks is about improved diet and fitness through Paleo/Primal/PHD principles, not about the personalities that run websites about those priciples.

How would one address censorship in a "less obnoxious way" (and, that's just your opinion, as this was the highest voted question of the day. Surely some others feel differently from you).

Furthermore, if you want to talk of insulating more, it's obvious that Melissa is mocking Dr. Kruse with her snarky profile. She has switched her username several times, and one recent one was also "the Blanket" I can't speak for Dr. Kruse, but I don't think he takes it as a compliment. Though, he may be flattered that she bothers.

Not all criticism has the intention of stirring up drama, but when it involves finger-pointing and accusations of online censorship, the chances go up considerably. If drama isn't your intent, I'd recommend re-examining your approach and tailoring it to some other, hopefully less obnoxious goal.

First, not all criticism is not by default done with the intention of stirring up drama. I was trying to be constructive. And, yes, her hypocricy is relevant because she was intentionally insulting me by calling me "whiny" and "dramatic" and question "pathetic." I am merely suggesting she take a look in the mirror.

Miss McEwen's drama is not relevant here, because she took the drama to her own blog. You, however, try to stir up drama by insulting the way someone runs their website ON their own website.

It seem abundantly clear to me that many, if not most, newer users of this site have never read the FAQ's and have no idea that PH is set up to run on a very specific format. Most of the stuff that gets deleted is just not appropriate for the site. Sometimes a simple rewording of the question can fix that. Stop taking it so personally people. The mods are simply trying to keep the site focused on it's original purpose and format. If you want to bash the mods here go do it on another paleo message board. It does not belong here.

So the mods can no longer enforce quality here anymore without a bunch of whiny people making a dramatic question about "censorship."

The original question, it seems, was something

  • not a topic about hacking your health/food/diet
  • something that could be discovered with a simple google search

The mods should close this pathetic "question."

Aside from a few mods, it takes quite a bit of agreement to close a question, 5 votes doesn't happen easily (and not often enough in my opinion)! It's not something folks can do to bully others. It's censorship in a very democratic way, and I think it works fairly well.

And stirring up shit annoys me, particularly paleo drama shit. That's why I voted to close this "question".

There are definitely some A-holes on here lately, many of the Bro-Science variety, but certain questions get closed because they are more commentary than questions, or not exactly related to the Paleo lifestyle. I've had questions closed on female health issues that were not "specifically paleo". A closure can be seemingly arbitrary or slanted, depending on who is "dominating" the forum during the time of your post. I close questions that: aren't really questions/ more boasting about what an ultimate hacker they are, blah, blah / total spam / or blatantly being mean for the purpose of making themselves feel like less of a pathetic pile. That being said, I don't think I'd close a question about the authorship of a popular paleo blog :). Reminder: those that want a discussion, but not necessarily answers can usually find engagement at Mark's Daily Apple.

The rules of this forum are not perfect. They allow for someone with a strong bias (who may or may not hide their bias) to eventually gain power and have control over others posts. That's just like real life. Look at some of the school teachers you (we) have had. Note that you can reveal someone's bias in a non-confrontational way.
