They taste so much better without the skin and soaked. I too wonder if all that brown stuff in the water contains some mold/fungus that is allowed to grow? What do you think

maybe you crave energy dense foods (nuts) because you are at the low end of BMI, might be malnourished.

I'm so glad to see this link. I bought a small can of roasted salted almonds recently, they are calling me like a siren of old,"come dance with me" They are more like pythons. I actually attribute my current sore throat to the little beasts. This thread gives me the courage to do what needs to be done. Give them the boot! There. Done! Thank you!

you could buy nuts in the shell so you have to take the shell out with your hands - pain in the a** but would control your portions

Mine too. I can't get enough of them. I once "drank" a jar of salted macadamias in 2 minutes. At least they're all monounsaturated fats though - it could be worse....like almonds. In order to avoid this habit, I don't bring them into the house anymore.

Same here with pistachios. The problem is self-control. The solution is not buying them.

I've had this problem with almonds, macadamias, walnuts and every nut butter I've ever made.
"Just one more" would send me over the edge from "still hungry" to "stuffed and bloated." I solved the problem when I decided not to snack at all any more. The nuts became a garnish for certain meals instead of a snacking option. My weight loss has accelerated and it helps keep grocery costs down, too.

Someone in the paleosphere once said you can eat all the nuts you want as long as you crack them yourself, so buy them in the shells. I can't remember who said that...otherwise I'd give them credit.

I've read somewhere (study) that nuts in general have a component which are addictive for the brain. I can eat a pound of almonds in one sitting at the and of my meal... same conclusion as other, I dont't write nuts on my shopping list.

I don't bring nuts into the house. Too addicting for me. If I want some as a snack I'll buy a small amount in bulk. I also don't eat peanut butter or almond butter. Plus, I don't digest nuts too well. Yes, I could soak and roast them but I don't.

Constantly snacking on almonds and cashews kept my weight loss stalled out for months. Every time I'd step into the kitchen, I'd grab another handful, usually without even realizing I'd done so until I'd eaten half of them. And I can put away a pound of raw almonds with no trouble at all--they used to be my favorite smuggled-in movie snack, and I'd eat the whole damned bag in one sitting, never hitting satiety. I only stopped eating them when they were GONE.

I love pecans, macs, and hazelnuts, and can eat a lot of them at one sitting--but never so many as almonds. Seriously--WTF, almonds?

I turned to IF to help me break my snacking habit, and it's worked great for that. I've also imposed a strict daily limit on my nut consumption--I can have one handful (which, given my small hands, is about 1/4c) only once a day. That's it. And while I've said "screw that" and had a whopping two handfuls occasionally, it seems to be working pretty well.

I ate a pound of almonds yesterday, in two sittings. Roasting them in the microwave 4oz at a time. I don't know if I have a legitimate craving for fats--e.g. not getting enough otherwize, or if there is some sinister property to almonds.

I have been monitoring calorie and carbohydrates for more than a year, managing type 2 diabetes. I am starting to collect protein/fat information as this may turn out to be more important than I had thought.

Nuts are high in energy and people who have a low energy intake will be doomed to crave them. Since must of us don't eat much processed junk, foods naturally tasty end energy dense, tend to take the role for the crap we no longer eat. Nuts, bacon, fatty dairy etc becomes the most concentrated and tasty Calories we allow ourself to eat.

I am surprised to find this link. I am so addicted to Almonds. I have a bag at home and a bag at my desk and I get down right moody if I can't find them or if the kids get into them. It is really all I eat. I can't loose weight and I am sure it is the Almonds. I will go several days trying to be strong and not buy them and then I find myself pulling into the drug store to buy the 1lb bag on sale 2 for 10. I so wish I could eat only a small handful a day. I literally will give them to my husband and tell him to lock them in safe and not give them to me no matter what I say. I can't find anything on the net to explain why I crave them so much.

I used to soak, sprout, and dry almonds on the regular, and I could never control myself with them. It's just too easy to eat way too many. I keep hearing that a lot of the calories in almonds will just go right through you anyway, but that doesn't help me because I need to gain weight. I stopped buying them when I had what I suspected to be an allergic reaction to them, but I think there was some mould in the batch... I got way overheated, my nose started running, and I coughed after taking a couple bites. I also felt extremely stimulated... it was real weird.

I am addicted to almonds too :). I don't gain weight because I run. But I can easily eat a half gallon of raw almonds a week! My labs are all great and I'm on the low end of my BMI. Still, I'm trying to break the addiction! Besides the half gallon of raw almonds, I can easily go through several cups of almond butter! I eat an all around healthy diet and all those almonds are just to satisfy my craving them. I didn't buy any this week just to make myself STOP IT!!! It's really sorta weird to me. I didn't realize other people had the same deal.

I am addicted to almonds, I think. I cannot eat anything that contain gluten, including rye, barley, oats, corn, rice as well as potatoes, lentils and coffeeeee:( and I love coffee. Anyhow, I eat 300g of almond for one sitting per day. I am a men and due to gluten sensitivity I have lost 10kg for the last 10 years, so I look forward to gain some weight, along with muscles obviously. And I don't expect to gain kilograms within a few months, as that would be suicidal, but a few years would be great.

So, how do I eat almonds? with a dark plain chocolate 85%, all sorts of dry berries/currants, vanilla cream, grapes, hazelnuts and walnuts. I do not care about fat, as I lead a pretty active life, not sitting whole day in an office - thanks god!

Though, there is still a lot of meat, fish and veges in my diet. But I almost constantly eat almonds..! it use to be walnuts. I know they are very healthy, but nothing in excess can be healthy, can it?

the best tasting almonds in the world are trader joe's marcona almonds with rosemary, oil, and salt. they bring out the binger in me so i told my mother to stop buying them. i just can't control myself and i'll eat half a bag at once- one bag is like 1200 calories.

i have about 7 different kinds of nuts in the freezer- all raw and unsalted. they taste good but aren't addictive for me. i can eat 5-10 at a time and be totally satisfied.

Buy unsalted to make them less moreish?

Are you sure you're not hungry?

Anyone else thinking that maybe there's something in the nuts that our bodies really want, if we're eating this much of them? Perhaps it's a trace amount in the nuts which is why we eat tons of them to get it? Perhaps identifying that and getting a good dose of it would reduce nut cravings? Just a thought.
