Why am I breaking out?

Hi All,

I am week 4 into Paleo and my usually flawless skin is breaking out. Should I think of this as a good sign (maybe my hormones are finally balancing?) or bad?

Has anyone else experienced this?

"increased fat are making you ugly and sick" and yet "I drink 1.2 litre of olive oil a day." Huh??

Give yourself another four weeks before abandoning paleo, if you're so inclined to do so, but keep in mind that you might not be getting all necessary nutrients for healthy skin. Hormone imbalances (in my opinion and experience) are always the cause of acne, but the question at that point is, what's causing the hormonal imbalance? Could be diet, stress, not enough sleep, things like that.

The major skin vitamins are A, E, and C, so make sure you're getting those in. The first two are fat soluble, so make sure you're getting enough saturated fat in your diet to help your body absorb it. Sources for vitamin A include green, leafy vegetables. http://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/food-sources-of-vitamin-A.php Sources for Vitamin E: http://paleohacks.com/questions/89366/best-way-to-get-vit-e#axzz2WEEsH9jA Vitamin C-- well, we all know that's water soluble, so make sure you're getting it from some plant source, somewhere. I used to eat one clementine a day just to get my 100%, when they were in season.

Also, acne-prone skin is often deficient in vitamin K-- or rather, the omega-3 and omega-6 complex. And here I don't like the term deficient, but rather, unbalanced: many people eat a heavy omega-6 diet without realizing it. Make sure you're getting your omega-3 in your diet. I personally eat three cans (or six servings) of sardines a week to make sure I'm getting enough omega-3. My gf eats omega-3 eggs and salmon, etc.

Also, consider washing your face with grapeseed oil and hydrating it afterwards with olive oil- the grapeseed is mildly astringent and has antisceptic properties, and the olive oil is (of course) extremely hydrating, and acne-prone skin tends to be dry and then over-produce oil at the same time, so hydration after washing will help tremendously.

I hope this helps. Acne is annoying!

When you switch your diet and EAT REAL FOOD, your bodies hormones shift and are rebalancing. This is definitely a normal occurrence and not something to be concerned about. Just look forward to a healthy body and glowing skin down the road:)

My wife experienced something similar and it wasn't until she got tested that she realized she reacted SIGNIFICANTLY to eggs and high protein dairy. Laying off both yielded almost immediate results. She too always had a perfect complexion. It was quite a source of stress for her, which likely only compounded the problem. Unfortunately, in our attempts to be good paleo adherents, we were stuffing her full of eggs!

Omg same thing with me! I usually have good skin and then a month and a half into Paleo and xfit BOOM outbreak galore I mean everywhere sooo upset not used to breakouts like this, I do 3-4x crossfit a week have 1 cheat meal a week eat mainly meats, veggies (not raw) and fruit and NUTS all week with occasional honey and Almond/coconut flour...Don't know what's going on ...everything I read on Internet it seems Paleo clears up breakouts/acne not sure what's going on since its everywhere forehead, cheeks, lower jaw, etc. not happy but I'm gonna give it a month even though seems like eternity, maybe my body is detoxing? I have no clue just rambling, anyone who would like to chime in please do so ;-)

Because Paleo= SCAM!!! The increased fat are making you ugly and sick. You really need to give your fucking head a shake if you think "breaking out" is normal.

PS. Mt skin always looks fabulous on Plaeo but I drink 1/2 litre of olive oil a day. No coconut oil bullshit.
