Healing Acne - How long did it take you?

Hi All: I am 2 1/2 months into the Paleo autoimmune protocol (no dairy, gluten, grains, nightshades, etc) and can tell that my body is slowly healing but is definitely still going through detox periods as I add in extra foods and really nutritious things like bone broth. I had mild acne when a teen and in my twenties and used acne cleaners to keep it somewhat under control. (With a horrible diet!) About 2 1/2 years ago I got full blown acne with cysts, dermatitis, etc from fluoride poisoning and a leaky gut which had been building up over time. My face is probably 70% better now than it was but I still deal with moderate breakouts on my chin and forehead especially during times that I think are related to detoxing. I also still tend to get some clogged pores on my chin and forehead although it does seem to be less now too.

My question to you all is if you had/have acne how long has it taken you to see healing? Were you able to get rid of it all the way? I haven't been able to use any kind of face washes for a year or more and am no poo (which my hair loves) b/c the chemicals and even supposedly "ok" ingredients made my face go crazy! I wash with warm distilled water and do gentle exfoliation with a cotton cloth.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated! Laura

(Also - I think hormones come into play some too. When I started paleo I dropped about 10 pounds which killed my period which had taken me YEARS to get back! I'm hoping it comes back as I gain the weight back again)

So you could be right that my bones are taking the nutrients first and getting rid of all the bad stuff which is why my face still breaks out - it's the toxins coming out through my skin.

I am eating grass fed/finished beef and bison, homemade beef tallow in my foods, add meat broth to my foods, drink some bone broth (I've started out slow with it), eat organic root veges for carbs, doing some juicing of cucumbers and carrots, and eat a couple of avocados a day. I also try to get Vit D from the sun a few times a week, do light exercising, get at least 8 hours of sleep per night, and TRY to minimize stress loads :) My bones definitely are deficient - I have osteoporosis at a young age. (I think it's fluorosis myself though)

What steps do you take for gut healing? I make sure to have lots of bone broth, animal fat & good quality meat/seafood, i think in the longterm it will help loads but it does take a long time. If you think about it if your bones & skin both have a deficiency i'd guess the bones could take precedence in healing as its more important, so maybe thats why skin issues can take a long time to clear up even if we're doing all the right things, all we can do is our best with the info we got ;)

Thanks RA. I was really happy that my back and chest breakouts cleared up a few weeks into the paleo diet and am hopeful that over time my face will clear too. But I think it will take a while for my gut to heal so I'll just have to be patient!

No problem Laura, 'calcium bentonite clay' is what you want, there's no particular brand really as its just clay from the earth, you can get it on ebay, you want the greyish looking powder, just mix with water to make mud, smear on face, leave to completely dry, crumble or wash it off & be amazed at the results :) The general recommendations are 2-3 times per week until your spot free, then once a week as maintenance. You can also mix with water & drink it which sounds nuts but is just as valid as external use I reckon, I wish I wasn't so lazy or i'd use the stuff more often, im a guy so...

Thanks RA! I have heard the clay can do wonders for your skin. Is there a particular brand you like? I have found being out in the sun sweating some does seem to help purify my skin.

Healing from the inside take a a long time, im almost rid of mild acne on my cheeks after at least 6 months of mostly clean eating & IF, the spots themselves are gone but I still have small scars & redness around some follicles, some days the scars fill in & the redness disappears. I find that using bentonite clay is the best external help, along with high intensity exercise to sweat a lot & then letting sweat dry on skin before washing it off. Try the clay if you haven't its excellent stuff to take externally & internally regardless of acne.
