Have you heard of Pyroluria? Is it a real thing?

I've never felt "right" pretty much my entire life. Nothing drastic, but there's tons of little things that always seem to bother me. Especially acne, sugar cravings, dry skin (i've never been able to get rid of my flaky scalp), social anxiety, and I almost never remember my dreams. I can't go outside in >55 degree temperatures without a cold nose/fingers. This particular site doesn't mention cold hands & fingers, but others do.

I've always suspected hypothyroidism, but the blood tests came back negative.

Is it even possible to be deficient in B6 & zinc on the paleo diet? Apparently pyroluria flushes the system of B6 and Zinc.

Should I go out and splurge on some B6 & Zinc supplements tomorrow? I'd feel weird doing this with all the meat I eat. Anyone have any information/experience with this? Is it real? Or some kind of scam? The list of symptoms suspiciously long... Anyone with social anxiety and acne would be sold.

I'm 23 and very tired of my backne.

Andrew, will you please check back in and let us know if you have any positive results with whatever you try? This condition is of great interest to me and I would appreciate hearing about any first hand experiences.

I went out today and bought some zinc picolinate, B6, P5P, Magnesium Citrate and Evening Primrose oil. Apparently B vitamins and Zinc can cancel each other out and are more effect when taken apart so I'm going to be taking my Bs during my first meal and my zinc at night.

I'm going to limit myself to 40 mg of zinc per night & see if I feel any changes. I don't want to go to high without getting tested first.

Andrew, do you own research on this as well...with the B6, i suggest you supp with two forms, 1. the 'basic/common' b6 you see everywhere (usually pyridoxine hcl) & also 2. the active/cofactor form pyridoxal 5' phosphate (P-5-P).

Some people have a problem converting pyridoxine to the active form, pyridoxal-5-phosphate, in the body. This conversion issue is why some people can intake plenty of b6 from food/supps but still have a deficiency in the active form pyridoxal-5-phosphate

I appreciate the help!...I seem to have symptoms on both ends of the histamine spectrum. For right now I'm going to experiment with some B6, Zinc, & Magnesium supplements. If that dosen't help, i'll look into testing.

Yes, it exists and is highly treatable. It does have many varying symptoms; you might have some and not others, and another person may exhibit the "others", yet not the ones you have.

http://www.antianxietyfoodsolution.com/library/Pyroluria%20Questionnaire%20from%20Antianxiety%20Food%20Solution.pdf

Many people are treated with antidepressants for years for anxiety/depression, when their actual problem was pyroluria. It can mimic symptoms of other health conditions and is often overlooked in a list of possible differential diagnoses.

You do not need a doctor's order to be tested for the condition; google "pyroluria test" to find one of many labs that will mail a collection kit to you with return instructions for the needed urine sample.

To get a reliable test reading you should go off (if tolerated) all B-vitamins and zinc supplements for 24-48 hours before testing your urine.

If you have a history of alcoholism, ADHD, anxiety/depression, autism spectral disorder, or schizophrenia, you may want to consider testing.

The problem you can have with taking high amounts of B-vits/zinc on your own without knowing if you have it, is you will not know if you are achieving the desired blood levels with your dosing (if you are pyroluric) or you may be taking too high of a dose, that could become toxic and do harm (if you don't have pyroluria).

I've heard robb wolf talk about this before on his podcast.... I think it was way back in like the 40's or 50's though, so you may not find the transcript very easily... guess i'm not really helping. just putting this out there!

yes, i have heard of it...

& if you are looking down that rabbit hole...

have a look into histadelia/high histamine/undermethylated,

& histapenia/low histamine/overmethylated

& here is the link to the pyroluria info from the same site as the above two links.

...see which one best fits your symptoms & may be get some ideas on things to try?

I don't think any of these are recognised illness or disorders as such...

On the histamine/methylation thing, you can get a blood test done for histamine & there is a methylation related gene test as well, some info here, http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/mthfr/
