Hack me please- acne, and testosterone?

Ok. I'll try to get basic with this, and cut things down a bit.

23 years old, female. mother of an 8 month old. 119 pounds. 5'6.

Basically- - I was 100% vegan for 5 years.

  • 1 year of that was raw vegan- the first year of veganism.

  • The last three years I was vegan I was a gluten-free, sugar free, vegan.

  • Before I went vegan I had cystic acne. I did two round of Accutane (awful, nasty, horrible stuff... can't believe I survived taking it). After I went vegan, my acne got a lot better.

  • I've been eating meat and paleo since October. I'm about 80%. I don't eat any nuts. I eat mainly fish, eggs, and chicken. I cheat on weekends when I see my boyfriend (cheating as in, pasta, pizza, a cup of coffee, maybe some chocolate. His family doesn't eat healthy, and it's important that I fit in, as it is a new relationship... And just because I know someone is going to go 0_o at me having a 8 month old but a newish boyfriend- I'm getting a divorce fro my soon to be ex-husband- I left him 4 days after my daughter was born because he had been abusing me... I finally snapped out of it. My boyfriend now makes me happy and is very kind, so it's very important for me to start this new life on a clean slate.... fit in, etc. I've overhauled everything in my life. Location, diet, work, everything.). Moving on... I cheta on weekends, weekdays I worjout and eat 100% paleo.

A typical day-

Breakfast 6-10 eggs An apple or two

Snack- 2 apples

Lunch- 2 large chicken breasts Spinach, or some sort of greens

Snack- 2 eggs or a can of tuna fish

Snack- 2 apples or berries, fruit, etc

Dinner- fish, eggs, or chicken breasts... veggies...

Yes, I am aware I eat a lot...

-Anyways, I workout almost every day. I have increased muscle mass. I can do 15 pullups/chin ups in a row, with my legs stretched out in front of me. I've been doing this for two weeks, and already see results. I'M AMAZED, because as a vegan I never saw ANY results or increased or toned muscle mass, no matter how hard I worked out. I do cardio everyday- just a brisk walk- 4 mph? - with my dog for about an hour and 15min. Sometimes I do it twice a day, but usually only once.

  • Since paleo I have gained weight- from 113 to 119. I look good, because of the muscle mass and how toned I am now, so I don't mind. Muscle weighs more than fat anyways. I'd prefer to be about 115-117 though.

  • THE PROBLEM- I am developing cystic acne again. I've ruled out sugar. I've ruled out wheat. I don't eat enough dairy to cause it. I'm guessing it's the amount of testosterone in the food I'm eating, since I never got it when I ate vegan... because of no testosterone being in the food, with tofu and all...

What do I do?! I like having a toned body. I just can't stand the cysts!!! HELP!!! PLEASE!!

Iodine competes with bromides in the body (a GOOD thing!) causing the body to purge them through sweat. Drink lots of water and wait it out, eventually the bromides will be reduced enough that there won't be any left to purge through sweat. So goes the description I read in Perfect Health Diet 2nd edition.

I had the same thought - need more fat, less protein. Of course you may be getting more depending on how you cook your veggies. I would even try cutting out ALL fruit for a short term (maybe 2 weeks) and see if it helps.

Also, way too much lean protein and not enough fat. Chicken breast is old school body builder food.. not health food. I would eat some fatty cuts of meat instead of chicken. You say that you eat a lot, but calorically... not really. I estimate your calorie intake around 2200. So you don't consume a lot of food calorically, but you take in a lot of mass. Your gut and organs have to work really damn hard to break down all that food and convert it to energy. Give it a break.

Yeah, Accutane is like poison... Nasty nasty stuff. Can't believe I did two rounds of it. I could definitely be allergic to eggs... I never thought of that!

hmm... could be, though I'd think that I'd have started getting the cane when I transitioned in October... not 3 months later :( You're right about the apples though, probably overkill.

Personally, a round of accutane when I was 16 really messed with my liver. According to my naturopath, it's possible that my body lost some of its ability to metabolize the fat in eggs which led to a bad food intolerance. It's worth looking into trying an elimination diet or getting tested (although that can be expensive) for food intolerances. My severe acne was plaguing me last year along with pain and other issues. Cutting out eggs was the perfect cure for me!

I tend to think most acne is related to a gut problem. And I would think your massive (but very impressive) intake of apples might be contributing to a bacterial paradise in the gut. Bacteria feed and they escape thru one of the bodies biggest detoxifying organs, the skin. Not only are apples a bit high in sugar, but they're fibrous.. more food for gut bacteria. I would cut back on apples, maybe try some fermented foods to balance out the gut. Also, to replace the carbs you get from the fruit try some easily digestible carb like white rice or potatoes. I know some "Paleos," think starches aren't kosher, but I follow a variant of Paleo called PHD (Perfect Health Diet).. check it out if you're not familiar.

Do you have any noticeable gut problems?

I would say the testosterone theory is highly unlikely.

With your work out regiment, and zeal for Paleo. Your acne could simply be your body reacting to detox, and cleansing routine. I don't know if you are washing your face more often, vigorously, or adding some drying agent. I guess what i'm saying is, have you been doing a complete makeover of yourself inside and out?

Adding a complete plant based Oil is good for most people's skin. There are some great oil cleansing methods that don't fight our bodies natural oils, or cause our skin to go into inflammation defense mode, due to over cleansing.

There are some incredible oils that not only stop the cycle of acne, but heal the damage.

Internally, you can detox with magnesium and zinc, this will help move any excess toxins from your body.

Vitamin D helped regulate my hormones. I take the "dots" that dissolve orally. I doubled up on the dose for the first week (one in am, one in pm). My cystic acne started to clear up after the 2nd day. The hormones in conventional dairy really bring them out full force. My acne is worse in the winter as well, so the Vit D connection really made sense for me.

hope that helps!

Amber, the next food you need to rule out is fish. My skin cleared up within weeks of quitting fish and other ocean-based foods like seaweed. This was several years ago, but from what I recall the iodine in these foods is what causes the zits somehow. I don't know why quitting fish worked for me, but it did. Quit fish for several weeks and see if your breakouts diminish.

If you're still breaking out a few weeks after quitting, please go back to eating fish and be sure to enjoy some lovely smoked salmon on my behalf. Another common dietary irritant you are consuming a lot of is eggs. Try cutting out eggs for a while, too. Nuts are another common culprit. Some people even react to citrus fruit! Just keep at it, you'll find your trigger. The message boards at acne.com can be a good resource.

Good luck!

you need to avoid non-ruminant meats like chicken, turkey, pork....you also need to focus on grass-fed beef and DAIRY...yes dairy! also use gelatin when consuming muscle meats to balance out the amino acids

if your body wants sugar, give it sugar, dont hold back

As an acne sufferer of 12 yrs, I recommend cutting out eggs completely. Pastured eggs are okay once in a while - for me 2 a day max, yolk only. I try to avoid the egg whites b/c they contain some "bad" substances that function similar to what's found in grains, according to what I read. I used to take in tons of eggs as well - the omega 3 organic stuff - did nothing good for my skin.

How is eating unhealthy fitting in? Just order a salad; say the doctor told you to eliminate it b/c it causes you health problems. Eliminating gluten and corn/canola oil got rid of my cysts, and I no longer get sick every 2 months. My friends and family mock me but are very understanding - just don't push it on them.

"Cheating" days may be more harmful than you may expect. They don't usually hurt you the next day - they hurt you a week or two later.

Of course, everyone is different, this is just my opinion.

Good luck.

Don't try this at home, these are huge amounts. I would eat beef liver once a week to start.

Oral vitamin A in acne vulgaris.

Having two apples as a snack may be a contributing factor. The sugar from the apples could be causing an insulin spike. High levels of insulin in the blood can cause hormonal imbalance. That's not to say you shouldn't eat fruit at all. I would just suggest having a smaller portion of fruit and a protein. The protein will prevent the glucose from entering the blood stream too fast which could prevent an insulin spike. It is always good to have a protein with a carbohydrate to help stabilize blood sugar levels.

your body is sensitive to foods which generate heat in the body. cysts are formed due to this body heat. Drink lots of water and for a month or so cut down on non-veg and start again gradually after your cysts disappear

Whenever I transitioned from vegan to paleo, I also had bad cystic acne. This is normal, your body is adjusting to something new. Make sure you are not getting oil on your face, though. Also, try to make sure you are still eating mainly protein and veggies. Me thinks the apple consumption is overkill. Turn those apple snacks to veggie or protein snacks. Good luck.
