Acne was better on Paleo, now back to normal after coming off the pill

Ive been strict Paleo for about 3 months now, which had pretty much completely cleared the acne that I have suffered since my teens (Im now 29). After reading about the contraceptive pill throughout my Paleo journey I decided to stop taking it about 3 weeks ago and my skin is back to what it used to be, but Im also getting red splotches all over my forehead as well as spots on my chin. Im assuming this is something to do with my hormone levels, but am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what you could recommend to help clear it up.

I should also say that I havent changed my eating habits - I dont drink apart from one glass of wine a week, and stay completely away from grains, sugar and dairy.

Thanks!

Thanks Ali, Ive noticed that after having any cheat meals my skin flares up so trying to be a lot more strict from now on. Otherwise, it is pretty bad at the moment even after 2 weeks strict paleo, so Im not sure. Im hoping it will get better with time. I might try the coconut oil - thanks for the tip!

Thanks Dragonfly, I do take a range of supplements including omega 3, zinc and D but I may not be taking enough. Thanks!

I eat like Dr. Art Ayers recommends right now, and I don't have real skin issues anymore. Stress is still a big issue, though. I've lost so much money last year being sick that I'm now constantly working to get it back.

Did you try taking zinc?

@NicoleRM, I am having a similar issue. I am 28.

I went off hormonal BC (the ring) back in August and my acne has come back probably worse than I've ever had it. I am almost constantly breaking out or getting over a breakout and it's not the one or two pimples it used to be. My face almost appears to have a rash in certain spots. I am also getting backne (sp).

Have you had any luck with anything working?

Since going Paleo about a year ago, I have started using coconut oil as a moisturizer on my face. While on H. BC, this seemed to clear up any lingering acne completely; now, it almost seems to make it worse. I also stopped using any facial cleansers and instead wash with just water. I have tried a couple times using cleanser since the acne came back, but now it just dries my face out completely.

I do not take any supplements and I do drink occasionally. I went a little overboard during the holidays with un-Paleo food, but the acne was back before those "cheats" so I can't imagine it's the food, at least not completely.

Turned out nightshades were causing my acne, well obviously excessive sugar doesn't help either. I was pretty shocked when I finally figured it out, potatoes and tomatoes seem fairly innocuous. I thought curing my acne would be much more complex since I've had it for about 5 years (I'm 20 now) but if I completely remove nightshades I don't get a single spot.

Second the zinc.

50 mg of zinc picolinate a day, plus 400 IUs of Vitamin E and my skin looks fantastic. The combination has definitely cleared the last of my perimenopausal symptoms as well.

I assume you are already sufficient in D?

I can't vouch for any particular answer, but there's some discussion of acne here: http://coolinginflammation.blogspot.com/2009/05/cure-acne-back-pain-tendonitis.html

I'm pretty ignorant of female issues, but are there links between acne and PCOS? Might be something to double check?
