Acne since doing Whole30?

I've been on whole30 (no cheats) for 2 1/2 weeks and have developed minor acne (maybe 3 or 4 pimples/red bumps) that haven't gone away, and new ones have shown up. My skin is blotchier than normal too. I pretty much never get acne, maybe one or two small ones once a month during my period, but have had clear skin for the past 3 years or so. I normally eat about an 85-90% paleo diet (I only cook/buy paleo foods but will eat a non paleo thing here and there when I'm out). Any ideas why I am having his reaction?

I have a similar thing happening and I totally think it's my body cleansing toxins. I've been following a strict AI protocol and have had a similar experience. Stress also makes your skin worse. So do some yoga!

scratch the GLA... that's for fish oil causing diarrhea. I think the fish oil causing acne solution was to use a pharmaceutical grade fish oil and see if it clears it up.

are you taking fish oil too? if so, try taking a GLA supplement for a while and see if it helps any. (Robb Wolf talks about this phenomenon in women in his podcasts) If you have any dairy hiding in your diet still, it could be that. If not, then I have no other ideas.

Since starting the whole 30 have you been eating more coconut milk or canned fish? Perhaps you are getting some endocrine disruption due the BPA

See the healthy skeptic's post on this one:

http://thehealthyskeptic.org/3-reasons-why-coconut-milk-may-not-be-your-friend

Also, fish oil can seriously cause problems in this area. I avoid the stuff now and just eat trader joe's canned (bpa-free) wild caught salmon, sardines, etc... 3-5 times a week.

Are you doing more heavy lifting? This can definitely increase IGF-1

Likewise, too much sunshine on your face can increase inflammatory cytokines.

Maybe try some green tea serum with 90% polyphenols like the Replenix brand.

Not sure at all about the detox/ die-off theory, but it is definitely possible if you are losing fat that your fat soluble vitamins/hormones/toxins stores in your body fat might cause an initial breakout.

I would call this a "healing crisis". You should rejoice in your acne. LOL. The toxins are being released from your body!

(There are some pretty good threads under the acne tag that may be helpful.) I think most of us will need more info to help. It could be so many things like sleep or stress. The first thing that comes to mind though is hormones: 1) Your body is now going through a regulating process and 2) If you upped your meat intake and it's store-bought meat, you're taking in a lot more hormones than usual.

On a topical level: I highly recommend using the Oil Cleansing Method. I do it every few days and the other days I use a combo of ACV and Baking Soda.

Make sure to write down what you're eating. I notice that when I eat at a restaurant, no matter how "paleo" I order, I break out. What I did realize was that a small patch of zits on my cheek was caused by my cell phone! As soon as I started using hands-free the zits disappeared.
