Acne & omega-3, omega-6

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hi All,

I'm eating pretty cleanly these days. Grass-fed beef, macadamias, broccoli, eggs, onions, avocados, (plus some krill oil supplementation for omega-3) just to name a few staples.

I've noticed that my acne has been worsening lately. Meanwhile I've been reading that evening primrose oil can help with acne because it provides some good types of omega-6. This got me thinking: If more omega-6 might help with acne, could too much omega-3 worsen it?

I wouldn't do this. Her diet may not be off balance now, it probably was in the past.

DHA supps are a bad idea for acne prone skin. it'll probably make it much worse!

Sry, no idea! I just know it has nothing to do with the caffeine. Have a look here http://paleohacks.com/questions/23543/green-tea-causing-headaches/23553#23553 but for real, if i drink one cup of green Tea, i get very oily.

Gut flora ? Constipation ? Previous antibiotics issues ? Also a sample day menu would be great.

Yes! same with me - nuts trigger my acne as well. @jellybelly, Checkout if dairy is causing it. Some type of cheese is also known to cause a breakout.

I've heard the "acne on certain parts of the body correspond to certain issues" theory but was never able to find any scientific support for this in literature or even any specific info in terms of what body part goes with what issue... I'd love it if you could point me to specific sources regarding this, did you read it in a scientific journal?

Acne issue aside, it might be wise to skip the omega-3 supplementation in general given that your diet isn't really overly omega-6 rich and you would have a pretty good 3:6 balance without it.

Some tips from me! I got a very clean skin by eliminating the last culprits. Tea is bad for the skin. There may be some less harmful teas, but make sure to eliminate Green Tea and Kombucha. Green Tea is some of the most worst teas ever. It tastes like rubbish, anyway. You'll find dozens of bad experiences with the so called healthy tea on many forums!

Do a strict paleo diet. Check out the autoimmune diet plan as a starting point. That means no nightshades and make sure to eliminate the eggs. I won't drop the macadamias, but if it helps go for it. And yeah, no dairy, except Ghee. Don't put any oils on your skin. And drop all the fish/ krill oil capsules. Coconut Oil is very bad for me, but i've no problems with palm oil.

Robb Wolf talks about primrose oil helping some people with acne although I didn't help me much (did it for one month).

You can try overdosing (Let us say 8g per day) with Omega3 for a week to see if inflammation (acne) will be suppressed..

How much onion do you eat ? Inulin can increase your acne quantity at the beginning.

You have it right when you say that some forms of omega-6 are good for you. I am not a science person but I think it's a difference in long-chain vs. short-chain. Either way, I've been told that the omega-6 in Primrose Oil is not the kind that you're trying to mitigate with omega-3 supplementation.

Paleo didn't clear up my acne at all but it's done great things for me in other ways. I started taking Primrose Oil and it definitely helps my acne. I also figured out that nuts trigger my acne something awful. They're delicious but they all wreak havoc on my face.

acne is usually a liver issue... if you are eating better than before it is possible that built up toxins are slowly being released from the liver into the bloodstream to be cleaned out. this may be causing the acne. maybe try a liver/kidney detox. eat lots of dandelion (the whole plant is edible). also, acne on certain parts of the body corresponds to certain issues. i.e. if you have acne on your upper arms and shoulders you might have digestive trouble.
