I'm 18, female about 30lbs overweight and I have acanthosis. I would like to get a good bulk of the weight off fairly sheepish because I feel my body cannot handle those 20 lbs.. My skin is very dark around my neck and on my face and under my eyes nd exercise is surprisingly difficult given that I'm not terribly overweight. Any suggestions? Ibe been eating paleo. 4 days now :p also, I don't go totally ny weight as I'm quite muscular, but I would like to lighten the load quickly, yet safely?

I don't know whether caffiene affects acanthosis or not.

Insulin resistance IS the most likely cause. Do you have skin tags, too? How about getting your blood sugar tested (HbA1C) and getting a meter to test your fasting and post prandial blood sugars. If you "eat to the meter" you may find you don't have to restrict calories, just reduce carbs to keep the insulin steady, eat good fats for satiation. And you will feel better with weight loss as a bonus. Fast is NOT the goal, health is.

Wikipedia says "The most common cause of acanthosis nigricans is insulin resistance."

So, maybe low carb paleo is the way to go for you. Now technically, you'd still be insulin resistant, but if you don't eat very many carbs (and not a ton of protein either) your pancreas won't put out a lot of insulin.

You can also lose weight on such a diet. I lost 113lbs. Now, the thing I don't like about your question is the fast part. I know you'll probably try to do this anyway, especially once the scale starts going in the right direction, but if you just concentrate on eating good food, rather than calorie restriction, you'll get there in a more healthy fashion. Meanwhile, you'd be keeping the insulin low, so the acanthosis shouldn't get any worse, and might even get better. I did calorie restrict myself, so I know the temptation, and I think I would have been better off being a little less extreme.

Start walking... a lot. And keep an eye on your carb intake and calories.

Go to a naturopathic, paleo-friendly doctor. get a full work-up - thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T3, Free T4, reverse T3, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol, metametrix gi effects to check your gut status. While you're waiting for the results of these tests to come back, eat the perfect health diet - some safe starches , supplementation - vitamin C, selenium, supplemental foods like beef liver for copper, bone broth soups, iodine, selenium, (there's more) etc. 2 lbs of vegetables per day-greens, avocadoes, tomatoes, etc., and 1/2-1 lb of meat (or whatever they recommend I forget) per day and some salmon or sardines or anchovies for omega-3.

Perfecthealthdiet.com

Buy the book.

You can try to go as low-calorie as you want and lose "quickly", but if your thyroid, gut, etc. are messed up it might be a 500 calorie a day diet, with which you will lose the weight, feel worse, and then gain it all back.

how do you think movie stars and such do it? They do it with a doctor. Focus on good health FIRST and calorie restriction after you have good health and are not so tired/fatigued.

You should also look into keeping the glycemic load of your food intake fairly low if you are having insulin issues. This is a great article that explains glycemic index with a nice reference charts for the glycemic value of common foods Glycemic Index And Glycemic Load for Over 100 Common Foods

maybe some other members here can check it out and tell you if they find it helpful and something that could help you in your situation.

It's helped me a lot by getting to bed at 10-11pm each night and not eat anything past 7pm that's carb-filled. Kettle bell workouts, strength training, etc. I'm not talking about body building, but a good strength training regiment. I personally like Jillian Michaels videos, they got me started and I built endurance. Drink lots of water...
