Discoloration in skin folds AFTER switching to paleo

My husband noticed two weeks ago that I had a light yellow ???bruise??? (as he called it) on either side of my neck (in the crease). I couldn???t see it at all until last week, and then only when I was in the sun. Now it???s quite a bit darker (like a darker bruise, still yellowish), and very noticeable. It doesn???t hurt, or itch, and it???s the same texture as the rest of my skin. I don???t know of any reason it would be a bruise (ie an injury, or something tight around my neck).

A quick search on google seems to point to Acanthosis Nigricans, but it???s not anything like the pictures, nor is it a different texture, or ???thicker???. Maybe it???s just starting. It apparently shows up on a lot in people who are insulin resistant, and perhaps I am, but I???ve been faithfully paleo for 5 months, so why show up now? Of course, I recognize that I probably was insulin resistant before paleo, and I still could be (I was and am overweight).

Has this happened to anyone else?

I ended up going to a doc in the box to have some tests done just to be sure, and I wasn't jaundiced, and my liver function labs were good. See my above comment, I'm pretty sure it is acanthosis nigricans

I'm now VERY sure it's acanthosis nigricans. It very suddenly occurred to me over the weekend that my elbow has been very rough, despite my obsession with moisturizing it constantly. One look in the mirror and yep, it's very dark right on the joint, and yellowish around it. It's been that way for at least a year. I honestly never thought to look at it, I just thought it was very stubborn dryness. Anyway, will definitely bring it up at my next doc appt

I'd get the liver function test before consulting too much more with Dr. Google, but if you want to go the full hypochondriac route, this site is good for inspiring worst case scenerio freakouts: http://symptoms.rightdiagnosis.com/cosymptoms/jaundice-like-symptoms/neck-bruise.htm

I haven't added any orange/yellow veggies (eat carrots, but not in excess, and I always have), and I'm not supplementing with beta carotene. I have a couple of doc appts coming up, so I'll bring it up. Thanks for the response!

Also - I have a couple of bruises on my arms from my dog, AND I'm limping from a sore hip from squatting, so I'm pretty sure my coworkers think I have massive sex injuries or something.

My fasting blood sugar was checked a month ago, and was normal, so no diabetes. Potentially too much time on Webmd, but it is disconcerting to see this ring around my neck.

Self-diagnosis by Internet is unreliable. A-N is normally considered a side effct of untreated diabetes and doesn't look like a pale yellow bruise. It looks very dark, nearly purple black, and the skin texture changes to velvety. If you are concerned about this, you need to a see real doctor to get your diabetes under control. Do you believe you have progressed to diabetes? Have you been tested? Or are you just anxious and spending too much time on Webmd? :) Webmd makes a bruised toenail sound like cancer, so I might suggest you have little reason to be concerned after AN.

Sounds like jaundice, which usually starts near the top of the body (head, face, neck), and the yellow coloring works its way down as it progresses. Go to a doctor and get a hepatitis and a liver function test at your soonest convenience (likely not an ER situation, but try to make an appointment in the next week or two.) Sometimes hepatitis can be silent for a very long time and randomly become symptomatic, so it could just be coincidence with the change in diet, or it could be that you have added something that is stressing your liver.

Have you added a lot of orange or yellow vegetables to your diet, or started supplementing with beta carotene? Sometimes those cause a yellowing of the skin too.
