Paleo Safe Mixed Drinks

Answered on August 19, 2014

I was wondering if anyone had any good drinks to order while at a bar that would still be considered Paleo safe. A buddy of mine recommended sticking to tequila so I usually get tequila with some sort of juice combinations.

Do you guys know of any other drinks that might work?

Red wine.

NorCal margarita (tequila, lime juice, soda).

Fernet Branca (as a shot or with soda).

Alcohol isn't exactly paleo. Just saying.

Learn your brands, order top shelf. You will enjoy the experience of drinking more when you are being as thoughtful and considerate about ordering your whiskey or red wine as you are when you buy your grass-fed steak. Drinks mixed from "the well" are no different to me than processed junk food - full of sugars, simple syrup, and cheap juices to mask the acrid flavors of low quality booze. Go to better bars, talk to the bartenders, order cocktails they take pride in crafting. Ask them to make your drinks without sugars - they will gladly oblige. There is a wonderful world of that one shouldn't have to pass on because of Paleo - we should be able to enjoy the pleasures of fine dining and drinking!

Drinking isn't Paleo but I suppose one could make the argument for fermented fruit solids? Any booze & fruit juice is definitely NOT Paleo. Stay away from diet sodas as mixers too.

Least "damaging" drinks?

Vodka / soda (plain soda water, no sugar) & a twist. <<< my wife's alternative MD (anti fast carb) suggested this....& only 1 per day.

Or dry red wine.

Anything mixed with soda water would work, Jason Seib author of The Paleo Coach mentioned that soda water was ok. So you could get a gin & soda water or something like that.

Like paleo-ified desserts, I struggle to really call any drinks paleo, but ... you really can't beat a good, cold hard cider. Just make sure it's dry (for taste, and less sugar), and maybe do a little reserach before heading out, to make sure that the ingredients are legitimate - http://www.real-cider.co.uk/ciders-not-recognised-as-being-real/ .
