Paleo and MD

My name is yomna, I am 21 years old, I have been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy (Limb girdle MD) 2 years ago. I have taken cortisone for 5 month, and I stopped, I have been gaining weight since then, I don't know if its low metabolism due to my condition or what, I have been trying perfect health diet palio, for a while I haven't started it properly, and i stopped for a while and I have been experiencing regurgitation, and I have been trying to fix it with plaeo and eating properly. I wanted to ask you If paleo can be helpful for my condition, and how can I use paleo properly to increase metabolism? Is it about increasing fats intake or what?

You're gaining weight because corticosteroids induce water retention.

Diet composition has negligible effect on BMR. There's no magic bean to make you burn more calories.

Alright, well I'm still going to say to focus on physical activity, but obviously you should only do that with a doctor's approval. From my experience diet alone is not going to get you to your goals, period.

You might find Dr. Terry Wahls new book, The Wahls Protocol helpful Terry Wahls is a medical doctor who was dependent on a wheelchair because of Multiple Sclerosis. While a Paleo diet helped slow the progression of her disease, it did not improve her function UNTIL she realized that certain micronutrients were missing from the diet. Supplements did not help, but she found that eating plenty of REAL food (NINE cups of vegetables and some fruit daily, in addition to the usual Paleo diet principles) restored her function.

I don't know if this would help MD, but it certainly is something along the lines of "couldn't hurt, might help". It is well worth reading.

Don't listen to Stephen. Exercise isn't necessary to fix your disease. What's important is moving as much as possible, but as far as running or lifting weights, that would be ridiculous to suggest for you, especially if it's painful.

Focus on your diet, removing grains and such. All the basic paleo advice and such. Diet is much more important than exercise.

Just make sure to use those muscles as much as possible.

Stephen we need to lift each other up to help each other. Just because you didn't get results from diet alone doesn't mean that she should just give up altogether and not try at all. If she physically can't exercise, then she has to do what she can do. No need to discourage her from bettering her health.

I can't exercise due to my condition this is why I am asking how to increase my metabolism through paleo.

Asking if paleo will help with muscular dystrophy is not a question that can be answered. There are many different versions of paleo. Will eating good food and getting regular healthy exercise help with health overall? Yes, but nobody here is qualified to say that a loosely defined 'paleo' is going to help your medical condition.

Your second question was if paleo will increase your metabolism. If you want to raise your metabolism then might I suggest that you improve your global metabolic fitness, through exercise. Exercise can be whatever physical activity you enjoy. This might be difficult considering your condition but maintaining or increasing muscle mass is going to be key for you to achieve metabolic fitness and for that you will have to find an exercise that you enjoy and can perform safely, I'm sure your mds will agree with that, just ask them.

While someone here might have some hints for you or point you towards some good research, be wary of taking anyone's zealous advice with more than a grain of salt. If you really want to cure a serious degenerative disease like that with nutrition, it just might happen with diligence.

I suggest trying to solicit the attention of Paul Jaminet through his blog/forum. He often provides fairly detailed and insightful answers for free. Others, like Kresser, are more likely to help if you line their pockets with gold. No offense to Kresser as I love his blog.

PHD is a good track. Jaminet is perhaps the most enthusiastic paleo researcher when it comes to curing real, previously uncurable diseases.
