- Following paleo, is it so bad? If yes, why?
- Paleo is known to be free of stupid carbs, so drinking may be a good source of energy and fun :) Correct me if I'm wrong!
- Paleo drinking envolves only a certain spectre of drinks! Wines, vodkas, and whatsoever :)

Hahah. Good source of energy....no....fun? Obviously :). I'm a boozer, but I don't need to rationalize it. I drink, therefore I am.
- Depends on frequency and volume
- Answered above.
- Mitigates damage rather than eliminating it.
But hey...I'm still here sipping on some vodka so......
Main reason for me is that it interferes with sleep.
I found that my tolerance got much lower once I went Paleo. A couple glasses of wine and I'm pretty sloshed these days. Because of this I definitely drink less than I used to, particularly when I'm out. NorCals seem to hit me less hard, interestingly. Not sure about the good source of energy, but still experiencing the fun aspect of it...just more carefully now.
Like lots of things a little in moderation certainly won't harm you and may even do you some good, but...
the problem is lots of people can't just have one or two. Either they are having 2 or 3 every night which is adding up or they are having 5 or 6 and the rest at the weekend which adds up to binge drinking. And people delude themselves and try to delude others about it.
This recent article in the NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/28/magazine/the-island-where-people-forget-to-die.html?smid=pl-share&_r=0 shows that some people who live long lives drink regularly, but they are doing lots of other things right ~ low stress, lots of sleep, whole food, plenty of sunshine ~ whereas lots of drinking in western society is as a stress-buster which is frankly a vicious circle.
So the answer is probably not so much what you drink, but why and how. If you drink in moderation to be sociable, it's probably fine. If you are drinking to excess to wind down, it probably isn't. Beer probably isn't paleo at all.
There are probably better go to recreational drugs, in terms of toxicity and addiction, and also social behaviour.
They are usually illegal however and also usually frowned apon, despite the fact that a few too many drinks and you can end up in your underpants, singing to the moon, or arguing heatedly with your best freind for no good reason.
In extreme moderation, drinking however can be pro-social, but its never non-toxic. Theres something like a thousand metabolites. Very few other drugs give a hang-over like drinking, and theres a reason for that, it due to the toxicity of the metabolites.
If it floats your boat, and u stay away from the more chemically complex drinks (ie you only drink quality clear spirits, and not methanol and sugar containing beer or wine) go for it.
Methanol is far more toxic than ethanol. That why they put a bunch of it in denatured spirits to prevent people drinking it. Its actually pretty high in wine, especially the red. We get this idea that wine is healthy from the french not getting heart disease etc (and because we like a good excuse. Chocolate is healthy...great I am eating a bar...wine is good...excellent, two bottles for me...lol).
But who says there livers are happy about it?
But..I regress...it floats ur boat....Alot of choices in a paleo lifestyle are less about optimal, and more about less suboptimal IMO, if you take my meaning..
I mean elephants spoil apples and eat them to get drunk. Presumably if they can figure that out so can we, it just wouldnt have been a regular activity like it is today. Its human nature to want to get high. Every culture historically consumes one drug or other. Even the eskimos made booze out of fish, lol..
We are genetically adapted to aged or spoiled food. I guess that makes alcohol a bit like frutose ie frequency and quantity in terms of what our body can tolerate.
I avoid it completely due to the reason that I follow Paleo. I have serious autoimmune/GI issues, so alcohol is definitely not going to help anything. It seems a bit careless to add a neurotoxin into my system that is already toxic. So, I guess it would come down to the reason that you follow Paleo and how strict you need to be. Even if you are on Paleo for weight loss though, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to drink frequently. I don't see anything terribly wrong with indulging occasionally for the average person though.
I eat paleo because I decided to make better decisions for my body and my health... getting hammered every weekend is a bad life decision IN SO MANY WAYS. But I always thought it was a great decision at the time... and, uh, unlike the previous poster who said, "I drink, therefore I am..." I was sick of feeling defined by the boozy clubbing nights, and wanted my life to be more meaningful and thoughtful. My bff and I are wine fanatics (it's only an occasional indulgence) but it's been a long time since I filled my weekend with an overload of crappy coconut flavored vodka and crazy nights where I'd "fall in love" with every guy who bought me a drink. (seriously, what was that about?) haha
I love drinking, mainly on weekends. However I defiantly cant drink as much since going paleo :(
