Where can I buy *affordable* MUFA nuts (Hazelnuts, Pecan, Macadamia, Cashew)?

Answered on July 15, 2016

Costco doesn't carry hazel nuts. The cashew nuts they sell are roasted (very salty!)

Safeway doesn't carry them either :( We don't have Trader Joe's, so unlucky. Does K-Mart or Savemart have em?

I need help :'(

Thanks

yeah. Walmart here stocks a can of planters macadamias w/ sea salt. Can is -not- big and it's easy to eat the whole thing if you're a nut fiend, and that weighs in at ~1400cal.

Yes, those are awesome!! The subtle contrast of nut flavors is delicious and addictive. But I have zero portion control with them and need to avoid buying them very often.

I believe cashews are legumes, like peanuts, and therefore not Paleo.

Cashews are a tree nut. The shell contains urushiol, which makes them very difficult to eat raw. They always come to you after some processing, whether labeled raw or not. This is why some paleos don't eat them.

The thing is...some first nations peoples are immune to urushiol (that's what is in poison ivy, btw), and some people who work in cashew processing plants in India become immune.

They are way too good a source of fat to have been totally off limits to HGs, so I don't worry about it.

Raw, unsalted macadamias are the best source of MUFA around. Azar nut company offers them at Amazon, and that gets the best reviews.

I used to not worry too much about salt (especially in the summer), but I find that roasted salted nuts get over-eaten and raw ones don't. :D

Costco now carries organic, non-roasted (steamed), cashews, called Hoody's.

I live in the midwest and there's a chain of stores called Farm and Fleet that sells a lot of nuts, including raw, at very good prices.

But I've found plenty of raw nuts just in the baking section of ordinary supermarkets.

Cashews are a tree nut - very healthy !

if you want to buy them "natural" i.e. without salt i am sure you can get them at walmart, K Mart, Food Lion., Target and also the several specialty nut stores all over the country

HEALTHY SNACKING !!!!

Buy them at Costco, but not in the snack food section (all roasted and salted), you must go to the baking section and they sell Walnuts (3lbs.), Pecans (2lbs.) and Almonds (2lbs.) at reasonable prices. We also get the macadamia nuts even though they are roasted and salted because they are sooo good.

Cashews are not nuts btw, stick with tree nuts...

I found macadamias in Walmart recently. You can always check amazon - they have all kind of nuts. But be careful - if you are like me, you can eat a big bag of macadamias in one sitting... they are just too good for me! (and a bit too expensive too) :D

Hey guys, Thanks for the input so far!

@Stephen - hey sir mind if I ask how much that one lb macadamia item cost? I haven't seen that item at my Costco branch, perhaps I should ask around. But it's salted, which is not Paleo sigh. :(

@Michael and @w8liftinmom - thank you both for the online retailer suggestions, have you guys tried canvassing on which seller has the most cost effective shipping, product price and overall service?

I'll check and compare the sites you shared, in the mean time. Thanks!

edit BTW, I guess hazel nuts are out of season. The closest Trader Joe's to our house used to carry them for 5$ / lb!!! what a deal.
