Stumbled onto Lyle McDonald's website this evening: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/.

Anyone looked at his stuff in any detail?

Is his stuff worth reading?

Surely not every human metabolism textbook is worth reading, and I think that oftentimes textbooks are not the best source of information, nor the most efficient way to learn. Is there a particular text that you recommend?

I was once lent a printed PDF of one of his publications. I can't remember the title but from what I can remember the content included chapters on doing a carb feed once a week and some information on bromocriptine. A friend wanted to know if there was any validity on the stuff about bromocriptine.

That notion is so tiresome.. Of course you can lose weight eating chocolate ice-cream --provided the total caloric content ingested is less than that being expended.

He recommends whole food on his diets with an emphasis on meat and veggies. He doesn't preach paleo, but his PSMF for example, is almost paleo. Just leave out the sugar free jello, the diet soda, etc. His methods get results, and in the end, being leaner and stronger equate not only to a better quality of life, but a longer life as well. He was kinda paleo before there was paleo...

His PSMF is what I've used to lose the last 70 pounds or so. Still using it to hit goal. And like you Frank, I find it mixes well with IF. And the meals are pretty big that way. Very satisfying. And I really appreciate his real food approach as well as his free meal/refeed approach. +1 to both of you!

I second the comment about the Protein Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF). I read his opinion about it and have tried it regularly with great success. I mix it in with my IF routine and find it an easy way to eat low calorie for a short period of time without feeling like your starving. His stuff is worth the read if your interested in getting cut. He also has useful in formation about the least amount of protein you should eat while dieting. I use all his advise and it has never let me down so far.

Lyle is the original Internet nutrition guru. He posted on the seminal nutrition usenet groups in the late 1990s and schooled people left and right.

Personally, Lyle's programs were some of the first nutrition articles I ever read. They helped me go from flabby to my first six pack in around three months time. I'd bet that many T-Nation type nutrition gurus owe some of their ideas to Lyle.

That being said, what he said was revolutionary at the time (low-carb and keto can be useful, be precise in your dieting, etc) but is not anything terribly new anymore. It seems that the marginal return when "hacking" fat loss and muscle gain might be smaller than the return on "hacking" health improvement (i.e. paleo!). Ameliorating health concerns can be incredibly complex, while body recomposition seems to much simpler.

You'll never find someone as hostile to Ancestral Eating as Lyle McDonald. He even trolls pro-Paleo dieters on Facebook and other social media for some sort of kick.

That being said, I have his RFL book and followed his regimen for a short time. He knows his stuff, very well. His concepts of a Protein Sparing Modified Fast, using whole food instead of supplements is a very smart step in the right direction. I also spent some time on a forum about weightlifting/powerlifting/etc that he frequented for awhile but eventually left, and he was more than happy to answer specific questions about the plan.

I like the dude, and his writing. But he does carry some negativity - weither it's part of his persona to be a jackass or if he really intends to offend, not my place - I'm an offensive turd when I want to be as well.

I am not at all offended my his mannerism. On the contrary quite amused and entertained.he is blunt and frank which most people are not used to. He says it like it is, if you are fat then you are fat, he doesn't fluff up reality which westerns seem to need .He is very smart and although I know a heck of a lot, I still am learning bits of details from his books .I think he has offered a lot to the fitness industry. I also am an advocate of modified paleo diet and dont see why what he has to teach can t be fused in to paleo or vise verse.I like his work. Very much worth reading.

Gotta love this quote from Lyle:

"...this current idea that carbs make you fat or prevent weight/fat loss is clearly incorrect. I wish someone would send this paper to Gary Taubes to help him try to remove his head from his ass. Both groups lost a significant amount of weight and fat and did it eating 55% carbohydrate."
