Good Morning, I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for lunch meats or cold cuts. Are any of them paleo? I know that most of the packaged ones have way too many additives. I read a label the other day that had HFCS. Really? Why does turkey need HFCS? Would I be able to find anything at Whole Foods or Trader Joes that would make a quick lunch sandwich (using pure wraps or bib lettuce instead of bread?)
I am trying really hard to get in the habit of cooking extra for dinner so that I have left over. Sadly, I find that is a hard habit to break. I have always eaten leftovers for my lunch but my daughter is not a fan of left overs for her lunch and is a diehard PB&J fan. We are working really hard on changing her lunch and have had success with fresh fruit, water or tea and some veggies. She has recently started liking mayo and I am learning to make paleo mayo. She has also decided that she like lunch meat. This is new because I could never get her to eat lunch meat.
Anyway, I am trying really hard and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

And while the Whole 9 folks are unhappy with the carrageenan (from seaweed) they use in their roast turkey, it's still a go-to for me when I want a quick 30g of protein (yes, I'll eat the entire package).

I would just brine a beef tongue, boil it and slice thin for lunch meat. Cheap and good.
The paleo purists will frown on it but let's be real - we don't always plan ahead as well as we could or should. I buy Boar's Head lunch meat for my son's lunch or Applegate brand when I can. It's not perfect but it's better than a million other options. Whenever I get down on myself about it I try to remember just a few years ago when I didn't plan ahead for dinner, I'd just run through Wendy's or McDonald's so we're a hell of a lot better off now, even with some lunch meat.
Applegate Farms are good, but expensive. I have found that Costco has plenty of Nitrate/Nitrite free and otherwise unadulterated cold cuts, and they are about half the price. Not necessarily pastured/grass fed meats, but an occasional necessary compromise, i.e. something the kids will eat.
I also recommend the Applegate's deli meat. I also buy huge packages of salami at Costco that my whole family eats.
My 5 and 6 year old reject a lot of my paleo experiments but one that has stuck is meat and cheese. I either pack in containers or plastic bags. I like to take some Applegate's ham or turkey, some salami and some gouda cheese (high in K2) and make a good-looking toothpick shish-ka-bob. I cut off the sharp ends of the picks. They love these and sometimes ask for them for breakfast too.
Applegate's also has some good frozen items too including sausage.
Don't beat yourself up... Try to find the best options for lunch meat, buy those and let the guilt go!
Learn to cook, makes lots for left overs and use them instead of cold cuts, which btw, if you like it, buy it, Its still better than wheat or corn or soy.
If we have time to do it then we try to cook a joint of meat and slice it up for the week. If you've got the oven on anyway its just making use of the extra space
Being a student on a budget, I know that trying to be 100% paleo is costly and time-consuming. I already cook all of my meals at home and bring leftovers in a tupperware for lunch everyday, and have eliminated all grains, legumes and processed sugars. Given all of that, I can't afford wild game and organic poultry or seafood for 3 meals a day, so cold-cuts, ham and turkey remain a go-to option for me for many things (omelettes, salads, breakfast...). I say do your best and take it one step at a time, being paleo is not about constantly putting yourself down. Good luck with your daughter and tell yourself congrats for trying so hard.
I don't eat the cold cuts because they have too much sodium for me, but I buy applegate farms for my son's lunches. He really likes "roll-ups" made with cold cuts rolled up around a slice of cheese.
I eat Applegate Black Forest Ham and Whole Foods in-house Roast Beef. I know the pork isn't pastured, but Applegate Farms does have pretty high standards and they're ham is fairly low in fat, so that minimized the bad fat. I think of it as tasty protein.
The Whole Foods roast beef is not grass fed, but it's pretty much the only non-grass fed beef in my diet, and Whole Foods' standards are higher than the average conventional beef.
Both have very few additives.
Trader Joe's also has some brands that have fewer additives, and they also have some (albeit pricey) precooked chicken that contains, like, chicken, olive oil, salt and pepper. I also love their cans of smoked oysters in olive oil (Crown Prince brand). There's a brand at TJ's called Columbus Salumeria, which contains some preservatives, but it works better for me because of Applegate's carrageenan. I get their maple or honey turkey (NOT paleo, I know). We are fortunate enough here in NE Ohio (who would've thought?) to have a local grocer who makes lunchmeat turkey that contains 1. turkey; 2. salt. It goes bad within a week or so (as it is preservative free) but is fine in the meantime - so you might want to check around at deli counters and ask to see the ingredient lists on their lunchmeats.
