Does anyone have any ideas for how food irritants work, i.e. according to what time schedule? e.g. if you have an upset stomach, is it usually from the meal eaten immediately prior, or sometime in the past?
The reason I ask is because I am having a hard time figuring out whats causing my upset stomach when the immediately prior meal seems perfectly paleo. Could it be something eaten earlier that morning, for example, because wouldn't food take some time to digest? Or more precisely, how long would food take to digest?
FYI - I had mild IBS prior to going paleo 2 years ago. Symptoms reduced gradually and almost vanished earlier this year, but for the last month or so I am having recurring IBS-like symptoms, without really changing my diet or lifestyle in any significant way, so its been very confusing. I do eat ice-cream/ frozen yogurt once in a while now, which I didn't do before - wondering if this is the cause of the upset stomachs? I didn't really consider myself lactose intolerant, but I do seem to have a gluten sensitivity, and perhaps that is the reason? I plan to go back off ice-cream completely to see if it makes a difference, but I have it so rarely (once a week, and in limited quantity) that I would be surprised if thats the cause.
Look forward to your thoughts.

I understand that its the meal prior to the meal you are eating. I still really don't get that but thats what I read.
I'm in the same boat, ice cream will likely do it if you aren't eating dairy in general. It can also go back as far as 3 days to track foods so keep a food dairy and every time you have some distress go back 3 days max to review food items....look for something consistently showing up in those days. (for me it turned out to be nightshades)
I think it really depends on where your upset "stomach" is. Is it small intestine or large intestine, etc.? How long does it take for your stomach to empty? How long does the transit through the small and large intestine take?
For instance, we ate roasted brussel spouts with garlic on Sunday evening (around 6pm) and OMG - I was farting garlic and pooping garlic on Monday morning/afternoon. I also ate the leftovers for breakfast, but the poop came out midmorning, so...
I've mentioned this as I can definitively say that it was the garlic that I ate that made me smell so bad!!!
For me, it seems that my "IBS" seems to flare in my large intestine as far as I can tell. It takes between around 2-12 hours before I get symptoms in my large intestine from previous bouts.
Hey there, my understanding is there are different levels of reactions. Type 1 hyper-sensitivity reaction which occurs immediately like in a reaction to peanuts, an anaphylactic reaction. Other types of sensitivity vary depending on the antigens present & can take up to 48 hours to develop.
If you think it's ice cream then it may well be best to make your own from frozen fruit & coconut milk.....Also, do you soak nuts & seeds overnight in lightly salted water to neutralize phytic acid levels? Some individuals are sensitive to phytic acid so you could consider this too. Read stuff like Nourishing Traditions, metabolic Typing Diet & The Body Ecology Diet, they all discuss the need to soak nuts, seeds & grain before eating....Good luck, Mel :0)
I used to live on ant-acid tablets and chewy quick-eze.... Yuk!
My cousin who is a coronary care nurse told me to have fruit tingled instead. Whatever ingredient in ant-acid tablets that stops then heart burn and sick feeling is also in quick-eze.
Works a treat!!
According to my really fun n=1 from yesterday, it was the meal prior. So we ate some uncured hot dogs at lunch, and then after dinner, my husband and I both had...um...you know...diarrhea. Sorry about that TMI, but there you have it. I'm pretty sure it was the hot dogs for a few reasons, but the most damning being that our daughter didn't eat any and she was fine.
Now. Before going Paleo, when I had a host of intestinal issues, my husband got a bug from some bad sausages and it didn't hit me until exactly 24 hours later. My guts used to be very slow pre-Paleo, so maybe I've actually normalized now?
For what it's worth, re: ice cream, I would go for the real stuff and never touch frozen yogurt again. Most fro yo is a powdery mix of chemicals that gets poured into a machine with water and then stirred as it freezes into a shake consistency. Blech.
It seems lately everything I eat upsets my stomach. I live on antacid pills. I know they aren't good 4 you but I'm miserable if I don't take something.I have been to so many Drs and even had an ultra sound last yr and everything was ok. So what is upsetting my stomach? I had a small bowl of oatmeal this am with no milk and a couple of hrs later I was miserable with an upset stomach and heartburn. I never had heartburn before and the last couple of months it seems like I have it every day. I don't ever feel nausous just upset. Other than that, I'm ok. Any feed back...Thanks...
