Mouth Blister due to Coconut Oil?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I have been getting a blister towards the back of my mouth, behind my molars ever since going Paleo 7 months ago. I really only have one that is reoccurring and I can pop it and then it seems to go away for a while.
Today was the first time that I noticed that it seemed to appear right after eating a few spoon fulls of coconut oil and a banana.
Any idea if coconut oil could cause this? I have always eaten bananas but have only been eating coconut oil since going paleo.

UPDATE - Okay, so a few days into it I have eaten plenty of bananas but no coconut oil and it has not returned. I am going to wait a week longer and then try eating a few spoonfuls without any banana to see what happens. If there is nothing then I will try mixing them again.

Thanks for the link. It makes sense that it may be an allergic reaction. I don't think I am allergic to anything else but this makes sense. I am going to do an n=1 experiment and see if it clears up. Thanks

Yes, an n=1 experiment is in order. I just love it so much that I don't want to give it up. ;-) I'll give it a try and report back in a couple of weeks. I think I continue cooking with it occasionally but quit eating it by the spoonful.

I have to be super careful with coconut oil - a teeny bit I'm ok, a teaspoon or more I'm doomed. As @JayJay said, ditch it. I would do 2-3 weeks, and then try again. If you want to really test it - eliminate both banana and coconut oil. Add one in. Fine? Ditch it for a few days, clear it out of your bod, and try the second item. Fine? Try both together. Would be interesting to see if the two together are actually the issue. Ahh.. I love N=1 :)

Many people are indeed allergic to coconut. My BFF (bless her lovely heart) can't have coconut in any form without hives. If your body is telling you no to coconut, do listen. :)

Never heard of such a thing, but go ahead and do a little N=1 and ditch the oil for a while.

According to that link: itching, swelling, hives, and blisters can be symptoms of an allergy to coconuts (or other tree nuts). I'm sure these things can happen inside your mouth if you are allergic.

Coconut oil and bananas are high in amines. I experience mouth ulcers 4-24 hrs after eating these. Pop 'amine sensitivity' into google, you should get a heap of info on the subject.

This is a new one for us. We've never heard of it. Thanks for brining it to our attention. Of course, it may not be the coconut oil too.

Try Fermented Coconut Oil. Tropical Traditions Gold Label is very different to most. If you are in New Zealand, try Ancient Wisdom brand.

Canker sore type blister? If I eat nuts and don't brush my teeth afterwards, sometimes I'll get one next to this one tooth on the side where food tends to stick.
